Hello All. Can I do it like that? (I'll find out!) /modules.conf show many protocols to be loaded for ppp and suchlike, but no mention of eth0. It does have "options ne iox300 irq=10" I've edited in "alias eth0 ne" now just before the above line.. The card is a D-Link DE-220P, which uses the ne driver. (PnP) ifconfig -a still shows dummy0. I think I can officially say I am bewildered now. Using ifconfig to try and bring up eth0 shows eth0: unknown interface: No such device ne.c: No NE*000 card found at i/o = 0x300 Anyone? Jen.

Your routing table is trying to route over dummy0 when it needs to be over eth0. What does ifconfig -a show? Now I can't remember where this is set up. /etc/networking or similar, I suspect. > I have also been looking for /conf.modules and don't have such a file. ITYM /etc/modules.conf... that other name was deprecated some time ago. -- MJR

Great stuff. As you've suspected and have probably seen from the other list, the disclaimer is totally legally insecure, so we probably ought to come up with our own for the day. Anyone any good with boilerplate legal stuff like this? Anyone know of something we can crib without problems? -- MJR

modems........ again!

Ok, I followed the advice and bought a linux modem from scan.......now how do I get suse to recognise it? I have tried yast1+2 with no success, I have been to the suse sight and followed their advice and still no joy...Yast keeps saying turn the modem on! (its on a pci card) please help before I give up and reboot to 98!!!

(First time debian user after Red hat). tcpdump is showing (as I just sent to Chris:) "When I ping, pinging my own IP shows echo request and reply using the loopback, but pinging the windows IP shows only an echo request, using dummy0. " I have also been looking for /conf.modules and don't have such a file. I need to look more closely here I think! Thanks. Do post any hints! Jenny.

Fonts, antialiasing, staroffice

After a long struggle, I finally have antialiased, truetype fonts working on my KDE2.1 desktop, and truetype fonts both displayed and printing in StarOffice. The results are stunning! I'd be happy to help anybody else who has tried any of the above and found it to be a seemingly impossible task! Chris.

networking probs

Hullo All, I'm trying to connect my debian box to our windows network (amidst many scowls from the network administrator who doesn't trust all this here linux stuff.) ("Who on earth uses linux?, I mean all that basic command line stuff, it's like going back to DOS...."). We have a few subnetworks connected to router boxes, I am trying only to connect to the immediate subnetwork my work winbox is on, address which is 192.168.11.0. (to start with anyway, heh heh!) I have linux box pinging itself on loopback and 192.168.11.106 (its assigned network IP), also by name (TRX850) but not any of the machines on the network. ifconfig also shows network card to be present and correct. I have netstat -rn showing 192.168.11.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U dummy0 0.0.0.0 192.168.11.100 UG dummy0 (router box IP for this network) /etc/hosts has had all IP addresses and names on the local network edited in, e.g 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.11.106 TRX850/TCL TRX850 192.168.11.102 jenny/TCL jenny /etc/resolv.conf I have left empty /etc/networks has localnet 192.168.11.0 TCL 192.168.11.0 /etc/hosts.conf has order hosts, bind multi on. This is a pretty basic question, I know, and I ought to know this stuff by now, but can anyone look at what I've done and go ...."ahhh, you silly thing, you've....."???? Thanks!
