The name of his website MobiliX.org is supposed to be mistaken for Obelix. The trademark Obelix was registered by the German lawyer Guenter Freiherr v. Gravenreuth. The legal charge is up to 250.000 USD or six months prison. The costs of the first instance are app. 15.000 USD. Werner Heuser has decided not to withdraw the name "MobiliX". He is supported by the German lawyers Jaschinski, Biere und Brexl - JBB (http://www.jbb-berlin.de). This case is another one in the recent series of trademark troubles for Free Software projects (SAMBA, Kylix, Kilustrator, SELFHTML, SuSE, ..). Therefore this case seems to be very important not only because many of these projects have names ending on "iX". The MobiliX.org (http://mobilix.org) site is dedicated to Mobile UniX systems. Therefore its name is a combination of the word "mobile" and the suffix "iX". It leads you to a lot of useful hands-on information about installing and running Linux, BSD, Solaris and other UniXes on laptops, PDAs, cell phones and other mobile computer devices. Linux/Modem problem

My neighbour is running Windows 98 and wants to have a play with Linux. I have set up Debian (Progeny version) on his machine but cannot get the modem to work. He has an external US Robotics 5630 (56k) which works perfectly with windows. After running pppconfig to set up a connection and using pon to dial out I can see the ATZ sent with an OK response from the modem then I see the dial string and immediately the modem returns NO CARRIER. There is a very short burst of noise from the modem before the NO CARRIER message but it won't dial. After this even the initialisation string has no effect until the power to the modem has been turned off and on again. I have never had modem problems with Linux before and I'm stumped. Going back into Windows (now wash your hands), after trying to dial out through Linux, the damn thing works perfectly. Some advice would be heavily appreciated. Barry Samuels

What version of the kernel are you useing? Isnt it the automount fs? Red hat and most other distros have hevily pached up kernels. I think all of the new versions have automount as standard now. What dir are you building in? dont think itll matter but ive herded of it messing up system header files that need to stay the same or somthing. ALUG: RedHat 7.2 Updates Anyone?

I'm hoping to build at least one "Update" CD of the entire collection of Updates from a number of mirror and "value added" sites later today: For RH7.2 in addition to the RH 6.2 custom variant (Eridani) that I usually work with. With luck, I'll also have a gash RH7.2 running to test all the rpms on the CD, later this evening. Anyone want a copy - for pick-up at CB2 CLUG tomorrow? Same basis as when Tom provided CDs: Cover a CD cost, or bring a replacement 1st quality 700M 80min blank CDR with you... Eventually, I intend to rebuild the Install CD to use the update rpm packages rather than the RedHat October 2001 CD packages. For some reason, OpenSSH has lagged behind the times, but stunnel is recent enough. I will include the v3 OpenSSH rpms, but please bear in mind that these are not "official" RedHat. A considerable number of bug fixes went into 3.0.2p1-1, and I won't have an opportunity to check rpm upgrades before Sunday. The "official" 2.9p2-12 Redhat updates are also there, of course. I don't know what has been back-ported by RedHat into their 2.9 portable OpenSSH rpms. May be able to squeeze the latest KOffice and KDE rpms on an 80min 700M CDR, but no promises. I'll see how much time I have, and how much spare space on the CD is available after the RedHat update directories fill up. My interest in RH7.2 is purely a stepping stone to the fifth generation selinux LSM secure operating system project. Anoyone interested in obtaining a Redhat updates CDR - email me so I know how many to burn before I leave early on Sunday morning. If I run into any snags I'll email to the list again. --James

If anyone who wishes to help doesn't know where it is, please ask me in private. The "cvs commits" list will become "The Daily Diff" of the web site, showing us what has changed, so even if we allow someone malicious to trash the web site, we should be able to put it back very easily indeed. -- MJR

I need help with finding a work experience placement. If any of you could help arrange one or just send me some contact info of possible places. It has to be an IT job and can be anything... programming, web design, network maintenance. As long as its not making people tae or coffee and it involves a computer its good. May be if your making a system that makes tea or coffee and its computer controlled it would be ok ;). oh I'm a BTEC National diploma year 2 student also doing a Cisco CCNA. Its kind of short notice as you can see from below but my last organisation turned round to me and said their department was too full to accommodate me. Which is fine to have left me with out a placement and not much time to find one. Start date: Monday 28 January End date: Thursday 8 February Oh and Kings Lynn, Swafham, Dereham and Norwich kinda way would be good. I cant drive but busses are very helpful(and slow) . Sorry if this seems off topic but I'm running out of places to try with this being so short notice. Would it be more on topic if i asked that it would be good to work with Linux systems.
