Sending ASCII to a Serial port?

What would be the best way to send char's and strings to a serial port? My problem is that i would like to send commands to a robotic arm that ive played about with a few months ago. At the moment the electronics teacher is using QBASIC to work it... I used to love QBASIC but I don't have a Linux equivalent and to be really honest I don't want one (BASIC == S...L...O...O...O...W...W...). In his current program he's opening the serial port and then using the print statement to send the strings to the robotic arm. How would I do this on Linux in c? Would I use the file handling commands and open /dev/S0 (what ever the Comm ports are called under Linux) and then use fprintf(serial_port, "command")??? Would i have any problems doing this f5rom a normal user account on my system or would I need to be root? It would be nice if anyone could give me some example code or give me the address of a good web site on the subject:). I'm Not so hot on file handling in c so even some examples of this would be nice. Whoops/HELP!/Promotion & Marketing ALUG

I finally did something I've been meaning to do for a few days and gave the people at bestevent.co.uk a call. They run computer fairs around the ALUG region (eg, King's Lynn tomorrow, Thetford Sunday, BSE & Norwich the following weekend), so I thought putting a few leaflets out at their event in exchange for some leaflets at ours would be mutually beneficial. However, I seem to have been offered stand space at tomorrow's King's Lynn event. Foolishly, I accepted. Erm, help. Is anyone else in the King's Lynn area able to come along to Lynnsport tomorrow and man the stand for a bit? I'll do the first hour or two (10-12ish), but I really need to get repairing my car and sorting out the house too. Even if you don't want to man it, I'd like to meet any other ALUGgers in this area. If no-one can, it's not a dead loss, as I'll leave the leaflets and posters which I'm hastily preparing for people to post back to us, or come along to one of the next few events. If anyone can email me ideas (or even whole lumps of text) for leaflets, that is also good. At the moment, I'm ripping through the ALUG site. I'll chip in a few quid for printing, but any more help would be welcome. I also don't have any giveaway CDs any more... anyone able to obtain some of those, either now or for later? More generally, is promotion at some of these fairs a good idea? I guess tomorrow will tell... -- MJR

Why should I get an 'Illegal request'?

I've just noticed this in my logs: kernel: sr0: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST. It appears to have happened after I played a CDROM although everything seems to work. Can anyone explain why this should occur and will I be arrested for it? Barry Samuels

I have a Tyan Thunder K7 MP board with a Matrox G400. I have recently enabled AGP & DRI support in my kernel.
