There was also Progeny from Ian Murdoch himself, but that has ceased production now - or to be more accurate, it has been merged back into the main Debian development. I think I may have a copy of that too somewhere. As for doing it the hard way, well I'm one of those odd bods that doesn't consider the Debain way hard. I always do a minimal install - never choosing any packages during the install process - and then apt-get whatever I need. Apart from not being a funky graphical installer it lacks nothing IMHO. Most configuration options are easily handled. Of course the hardware config is the tricky bit as you mention, but when you run modconf (or when it is run for you on install) there is little to fear it trying a module. If it doesn't detect a compatible device then in won't be loaded in. Having said that pretty much all my installs are for servers, so they tend not to have complex graphics/sound setups, although my first proper Debian install was onto my Dell laptop which involved switching sources to testing to get XFree 4 to support my graphics card - but then my first proper Linux install involved an immediate kernel recompile to get token ring support for my network card, so I'm used to be awkward!!! True enough, nice graphics and less technical information always make the new user happy! The thing that always gets me is the number of times the Linux install is talked about as being too hard for the average Windows user. How many average Windows users have actually installed Windows? My parents have been using Windows since 3.1 on a 386 but never actually installed it - it always comes preinstalled! Your reply seems to answer whay I hadn't seen my post on the list. I have once again done a simple reply and not a group reply! Ho humm... samba and win2k

Hi all, Just as I thought I had the hang of samba (fool!) I got a computer with windows 2000 and the whole authentication thing has gone up in smoke. If I create a mapped drive from the windows to the various samba shares on the linux server, when I log back on next day they refuse to reconnect, windows says "incorrect password or unknown username" and smb log says "rejecting user 'jenny': authentication failed." Now, even if I set a new samba password for jenny on the linux box I get this message. If I try to log in as a different user, the windows box say, oh, no, sorry, "the credentials supplied conflict with a different set of credentials" To make it worse the whole thing seems to be intermittent. And sometimes the mapped drives will reconnect to one of the linux servers but not the other, and the next time it will swap. Has anyone come across problems like this using samba with windows 2000? I'm using samba 2.0.8. Thanks, Jenny.

Yes, quite correct, that's why I referred to it in the past tense :-) Still available from linuxemporium, although, as you say, no longer being developed. My understanding is that, once installed, Storm can then be upgraded using the usual debian methods. I believe progeny also uses some type of auto-installer, that could be another avenue for Paul to look at. HTH Syd

Any ideas My guess is that root efective uid established by having the perl script setuid is not being passed on to the child process that is started by system(). In C I think the workaround is to call: setuid(geteuid()); This sets the real and saved uids to the same as the effective uid so from then on the process looks just like one that was run by root rather than one which is setuid (a setuid process has effectice uid set from the file, by real uid and saved uid come from the invoking user). Hopefully perl will have the equivalent to the C functions above. Steve.

Hi Folks Does Debian come with a pretty graphical installer that automatically probes and configures most of the hardware ?? Or does Debian have to be installed the hard way.... Regards, Paul.
