Weekly IRC reminder

This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.openprojects.net in the #alug channel, you can take a look at www.openprojects.net to get more info on the openprojects network. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server uk.openprojects.net" or "/server eu.openprojects.net" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. Perl Arrays....

Hi Everyone... I want to change multiple occurances of a char (! to \n) in a large array, can someone point me in the right direction please.... I'm using Net:Telnet:Cisco and it loads the config into an array, I want to show the running config but the line feeds arn't there, just the "!" indicating a new line.. TIA Simon

problems with the Alug website and email lists

Hi all, As of the other day Martyn who has so graciously provided alug with space for hosting on his dedicated server had to close it down at very short notice. As such the mailing list and website were rather dead for a while. We now have something sorted out in the interim, the alug webpage is being hosted by Martyn currently on space that he has again donated to us, and the mailing lists are being looked after by Jonathan or Black Cat networks. Anyhow normal service should resume soon...... Unable to lock password file...

Hi Everyone.... I'm trying to add users from a perl script, the script writes out lines of users to add to the system. Then a system call is made using : system("/bin/bash","/tmp/Seabed_Users"); In the file Seabed_Users is the following... adduser -g 45 -s /bin/false -p FtItmgt8G8RJY -d <directory>/username username When the file is run from the command line as root it works fine, however from the setuid script it doesn't work I get "adduser: unable to lock password file" in the error log.. Any ideas Thanks Simon

At the install day someone (sorry we never actually introduced ourselves) showed off Xplanet with debian developers listed on it... Looking for software...

Hi everyone, I've been trying to think of a project that I could do, and I've come up with an idea but want to make sure that I'm not reinventing the wheel. I race model RC Nitro powered cars and the software for timing purposes is very expensive and only run's on Windows. Ah-ha, there's a good project in there should it not have already been done.. So, any of you chaps heard or know of such a project ? Simon

So, what died?

Short of swapping drives (as I don't have a spare), can anyone hazard a guess as to how I work this out, or if it could be something else entirely? Errors include (from memory) {hdb: drive not ready error} Typing 'ls' returns a set of io errors, one naming each file in the directory. Typing 'clear' (or mount, etc) returns 'command not found' Shutting down gives me a console that repeats 'ext3 journal aborting' ad infinitum. Eventually I just powered it off.
