Mandrake install worked!

Hi there, again. Just to tell you that I appear to have a working Linux system now, after previous postings regarding problems with the install. Briefly, I did replace my computer with a newer one, 64MB RAM and 4GB HD. Then just put in the CD and boot floppy, under Win98, and it worked at the second attempt, with a neat GUI install. A couple of things I found offputting as a Linux newbie: No-one explains the partitioning process, you seem to have to know about that already. The 'auto-partition' offers several partitions under Linux, why is that? I wanted, and got, just one, mount point '/', alongside a Win98 partition. Also, it is so much easier to learn Linux using a GUI rather than commandline/console, such as browsing the file structure as well as opening various apps. Sounds obvious, but this doesn't seem to be emphasised in the literature, where commandlines and editing config files abound. I'm glad I persisted, though productivity so far has gone down (damn 'Asteroids'!). I may eventually have some questions regarding C++ possibilities. However, I couldn't disagree more with the GUI thing. For a newbie, the command line stuff is a far steeper learning curve but once you are even halfway up the cliff you have a much better understanding of what is actually going on in your linux system. I'm renowned for doing things the hard way, however. Jenny.

Remote command execution..

Hi all, Is it possible to fire up ssh and run a remote command in a perl script, somthing like : system("ssh <user>@<host>:/<command>"); Would the above run the command then quit or stay logged in ? Basicaly I need to run a script on a local machine and dependant upon results, run a script on a remote machine, then continue back with the script on the local machine. Hope it makes sense.. Brother network printers

Hi Folks Picked up a Brother HL1660 printer recently complete with a network interface.. Having no end of fun getting it to print anything. I have the IP address and the subnet mask set as 192.168.0.118 & 255.155.155.0 and can ping the thing from any machine, but it will not print! The print queue on the computer is set up for a remote printer, but any jobs are just held in the queue. Help. Regards, Paul.

IMAP server setup

I want to centralise the storing of my email for my 5 machine LAN. So, after a little online research, I found setting up an IMAP server appeared to be the answer. However, following further investigation, I can't find any tutorials to assist me in doing this. What I want to do is: * Collect email from multiple pop3 addresses * Check email for viruses and automatically bounce virus infected emails * Filter out junk mail into a 'checking' account * Filter email into different IMAP accounts based on to: from: subject:, etc * Further filter the email going into the IMAP account into certain directories (this is a client or server issue?) * Read email on several machines (using IMAP-compatible client) * Reply to, forward to different IMAP accounts, etc What the easiest way to achieve this? Furthermore, in contrasting POP3 and IMAP, I have the following issues: * Are outgoing messages for an IMAP account stored with the IMAP account, or on the local machine? * What method is used for sending the email to the outside world for IMAP? Currently I download from POP3 and send via my ISP's SMTP server. * As the email is stored centrally, I would assume global searching is straight forward. java bug problem

Hi list, I've just installed j2re1.3 on a box running debian potato with 2.2.19 and it won't run, brings up the error code 4F530E43505002CC http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4512651.html I've installed the same package in the same way (apt-get) on a second box running the same software. This one runs the same files just fine. Google has many reports of this problem but no answers. I realise this is a feeble and flimsy posting from which I expect to have someone miraculously whisk up a solution, but can anyone shed any light? I can try to capture the output of the error report if it is useful. Thanks, Jenny.
