Exim now works perfectly. Also, the pine problem I thought may have been related (the INBOX folder 'not being selectable') was down to the fact that pine wants it's 'folders' to have a header at the top (oh, and the fact it needs to be a file, rather than a folder...d'oh). Quickly sorted by copying one of the folders it's creates into /var/mail and renaming it. kppp gateway problem

Hi, I normally access the internet via a gateway on my network via my ethernet card, however, I have recently had a few occasions when I needed to temporarily access an alternative ISP using a modem. To keep things simple I thought I would use kppp to setup the dial-up connection. The modem connects to the dial-up ISP ok, establishes a ppp link, and correctly modifies /etc/resolv.conf to point at the dial-up ISP nameservers, however I cannot ping, or reach anything over the link. If I run tcpdump I instead see that the data is still being routed through my ethernet card rather than now going through the modem. i.e: [ian@swan ian]$ ping 80.225.253.50 PING 80.225.253.50 (80.225.253.50) from 192.168.1.232 : 56(84) bytes of data. --- 80.225.253.50 ping statistics --- 90 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss If I run netstat I see: [ian@swan ian]$ netstat -rn Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 80.225.252.38 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 40 0 0 ppp0 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 40 0 0 lo 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth0 192.168.1.1 is my ethernet network's internet gateway machine. I have set this to "Default Gateway" rather than "Static Gateway" and have also selected "Assign the default route to this gateway". Question: What silly thing am I doing wrong (or have misconfigured) to prevent kppp changing the default gateway route from the ethernet card to the modem? Thanks, Ian. Linux Standards Base

In compiling my report about Linux for uni, I have merely skirted around the topic of LSB. I notice, for example, that there are only a few distros that have LSB compliance. I guess that the LSB is a good idea (in theory), since Linux has gone the way UNIX did by diversifying (perhaps too much)... Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It seems, also, that compliance means that RPM needs to be used? (That's insane IMHO, but I haven't tried APT-RPM). Any thoughts oh wise ones? ;)

Some extra information which, I think, may answer one of my own questions. I have just connected my laptop to the network and tried to print to the same remote printer. This works perfectly well. I also see in lpr.log: machine1 lpd[28252]: machine3.mynetwork requests recvjob timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading cf file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading cf file for timicrol I don't see this when trying to print from the Mandrake machine (Machine2) so I suspect there is nothing going to the remote host (Machine1). Anything I could try on the Mandrake machine to try and sort this? (Anyone have a steam roller ?) Barry Samuels

My problem is still there. Everything I have tried hasn't worked. The machine from which I am trying to print (Mandrake 9.0) says that the remote host refused to accept the control file but the remote host (Debian Testing) doesn't show any signs of access or attempted access in the logs. Stopping the firewall on the remote host makes no difference. Is there any way that I can find out on which machine the problem lies? All other network functions perform properly. I think that the Mandrake machine is lying to me but I can't prove it. Barry Samuels

Problem No. 347 - Remote printing

Well - it feels like that sometimes. I have two machines networked. Machine1 (Debian Testing) has two printers - one on the parallel port and one on a USB port. I want to be able to print from Machine2 (Mandrake 9) to Machine1 but when I try I see a message in the logs 'Remote host did not accept the control file'. I see this whichever printer I try and use so I assume the problem is on Machine1 but I don't know how to correct it. Machine1 does have an /etc/hosts.lpd with the following entry: machine2.mynetwork There is an iptables firewall running (Endoshield) but I have tried after shutting down the firewall to no avail. All other networking functions correctly. Any advice would be appreciated. Barry Samuels

Problem installin Videolan Client

Hi all, I'm having trouble installing Videolan Client. I'm using Redhat 8.0 (2.4.18-19). I've installed packages for libdvdcss,libdvdread and libdvbpsi but when I try to install the vlc packages with the command 'rpm -Uvh vlc-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm vlc-mad-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm vlc-gnome-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm' I get the following error message :- error: failed dependencies: liba52.so.0 is needed by vlc-0.4.6-1 libavcodec.so is needed by vlc-0.4.6-1 libmad.so.0 is needed by vlc-mad-0.4.6-1 Can anyone help me out ?

Its superb but theres a few hitches Linux wise.. 1) You can only register using a windows box and IE5/5.5 and no firewall running! Once up and running turn off the modem for an hour or two and then you can DHCP on using Linux but make sure your firewalls tight and you passwords are shadowed - I left mine unsecure to see what happened and got hacked pretty quickly one an attempted takeover and once sendmail was so busy I had to cold boot! 2) I get 1.5M UDP (mainly who-has) on my port per week so watch out what you do with a tcpdump output on a small router. 3) I had to have the engineers round 3 times to get it sorted properly. Warning: With 600k you can browse everything useful in about a week! And those nasty sites with splash screens everywhere can download too fast for you to stop them so be ready to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
