wireless networking

Thanks to everyone who replied to my wireless network questions the card is up and running. I brought a DLink DWL-500 which has the prism2 chipset which seems to be the most supported chipset. Here's somethings I found useful. There is a RedHat RPM for setting up wireless network cards which was handy it can be found at prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us and includes all the documentation as well. http://jgo.local.net/LinuxGuide/linux-ethernet.html for the basics of which scripts to edit to get your network going. Knoppix problem

I seem to be having problems with the ALUG mailing list. The message that I last sent wasn't returned to me as it usually is and I have received no mail from ALUG since. I see on the ALUG site archives that my message is there together with two replies for which I thank the people concerned. As far as the SCSI modules go I really can't remember if the module offered was ncr53c8xx.or sym53c8xx.o but it was the only one offered. SCSI adapters in both machines are Symbios adapters. Linux Anti-virus software.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced anti-virus product for Linux? Ideally we would want incoming and outgoing mail scanned and if possible HTTP/FTP downloads. This is for Red Hat 7.3 to protect PCs that will be using it as a mail/proxy server. Regards, Rob.

Paintball?

Would any members of ALUG be interested in paintball matches against other LUGs? It's currently being discussed by some LUGs, although mostly they seem to be from the Midlands area at the moment. Knoppix problem

I have recently acquired a Knoppix CD. Neither of my two computers will boot from a CD so I made a boot floppy from the knoppix image provided. Booting from machine 1, a dual CPU with 512MB ram and all SCSI devices produces the message 'Can't find KNOPPIX file system, sorry' and I find I'm dumped into a *very* restrictive shell which, although it includes 'insmod', doesn't include 'ls' which is not very helpful. Insmoding the correct SCSI module gets me precisely nowhere and 'lsmod' produces nothing. Trying the 'expert' boot gives me a list of SCSI modules and having selected the appropriate module I get the same result. Booting from machine 2 with 128MB ram and also all SCSI gets me into the full Knoppix system without any problems. Although both machines use the same SCSI module, ncr53c8xx, one of the differences is that Machine 1 has a dual channel SCSI adapter which is fairly modern and Machine 2 has a single channel adapter which is some years old. Anyone have any experience of this? Regards Barry Samuels

Realplayer plugin for Mozilla uses 98% CPU!

I use Mozilla 1.0 on Debian Woody. I have installed RealPlayer8, and can run realplay fine. However, when I visit a website (such as the Radio 1 site, which is WHY I installed it, having used Windows for a project, I got rather addicted to John Peel's show again ;) ), realplay uses up to 98% of the CPU, meaning I have to kill the process. Typing about:plugins in the address bar gives: <snip> File name: /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/rpnp.so Mime Type Description Suffixes Enabled audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin RealPlayer Plugin Metafile rpm Yes <snip> So it seems to be installed OK. Anyone else found this? Anyone had any luck with RealOne (the newer one?) I can't seem to find ANY plugin bundled with it. It's quite irritating. Specially cos my housemate oversaw both install processes... "so it took u about 3 minutes in Windows, and a whole night and it still doesn't work in Linux..."
