Firstly, welcome aboard. You'll be coming to the pub meets in Norwich?? Secondly, ouch! Have you got rid of Gnome yet?? Hopefully. But if not; On a machine of that speed, you'll want to be doing a... sudo apt-get install xubuntu ...which installs all the relavent packages to make XFCE the Desktop Environment. Log out and click "Sessions" on GDM - select XFCE from the list. XFCE is a light-weight, resource friendly DE which should handle much much better on your laptop. Other lightweight desktop environments you might like to try; fluxbox, IceWM. (PS. Samba problem with just one Windows client

I run Samba on my Slackware Linux system. All our client computers except one can access the Samba shares OK. On the one that fails it connects OK and the network drive icon appears but when you click on the icon you get a message saying:- E: Access is Denied The same user can connect successfully from other computers on the network. We've checked all the obvious things like the client system is in the right workgroup and the IP address is right at both ends. Other things work fine (HTTP, telnet, etc.) A "net use E: \\server\homes" returns success but if you then try to go to drive E: you get "Access is denied". Hello Alug! I'm a newb who joined the list on 23rd Dec: it's taken this long to get ubuntu 5.10 on my (300mHz) laptop to connect, but here it is! All filtered through it's unheard-of-by-linux (NetVin430) pcmcia lan card too. Dave

Firefox character set problem

I'm just investigating a trip to Poland and thus I'm seeing lots of Polish web sites. Firefox is making a right pigs ear of all the special Polish characters (basically lots of different sorts of accents). It copes with French accents fine. What do I need to do to get it to handle the Polish alphabet. I have a suspicion I need a character set that's something other than iso8859-1 but trying the only font offered for "Central European" (which was an iso8859-2) didn't help at all. -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk) "Never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence."

Hi Folks, Win2K - SP2 is well old. My 2 year old installation disc was Win2k inc SP2, I have since loaded SP3 and SP4. I upgraded to SP3 & 4 'cos Photoshop CS2 demanded it. Actually, CS2 runs as happily in SP2 as latter upgrades, however, it is now on a machine that doesn't have a modem and connection. I have less crashes! Putting my 'external' hostname in /etc/hosts, OK?

Is there any way to make my 'external' host name resolve correctly when used on my home network behind a NAT router firewall? To access the apache server on my Linux box from the outside world the address is:- http://84-45-228-40.no-dns-yet.enta.net/ Is there any way I can get this to resolve when used on the LAN at home? This would allow me to send URLs to my wife and/or other family members so they can use them directly rather than me having to remember to change the 84-45-228-40.no-dns-yet.enta.net to the local name of my Linux box. Suse and scanning again

Thanks to Nick for replying! The problem, this morning, turned out to be not rebooting after editing the rsmgr file. What happens is, there is a white list for which scanners are allowed, and all others are forbidden. This is a change from 9.3 to 10.0. I think the idea is to stop malware addressing an imaginary scanner for some nefarious purpose. So, YAST is supposed to set the whitelist to the scanner you have defined, in resmgr, and indeed it does, but if you don't reboot, for some reason xsane does not see it, and you end up with my situation last night, where the files all look fine, but your user account cannot see the whitelist from xsane or iscan, but root can. The Suse materials don't tell you about rebooting, hence all the head scratching. Suse has another thing which is very puzzling and not documented as obviously as maybe it should be. To access a network printer, you need to run lppasswd (probably not the exact command). Then you set up a user and password, which is completely independent of your system users. It is quite odd, the signon passwords do not work, including root's, and when you set up a user to manage the printers, you can set them up with a different password. There must be a dedicated user/password file somewhere, just for printers. They must have some kind of reason for this stuff, but heaven help any users more naive than me! Peter

Permissions & scanning in Suse 10.0

Does anyone know how to do this? What happens is, I've gone through the YAST configuration of the scanner, and its there ok. In fact, its there twice, once with the epkowa driver and once with the xsane driver. Start up xsane as an ordinary user and it is not found. Same applies to kooka and to iscan. In a terminal or not, makes no odds. Start up xsane, or the others, as root, from a terminal, disregarding the dire warnings, they all see the scanner and everything works perfectly. They offer a choice between the scanner with the two drivers, as you would expect. Check /etc/resmgr in accordance with Suse instructions, and the relevant line of the form add usb vendor=xxxx,device=yyyy is there as its supposed to be and the numbers are correct. As you would expect, given that it works for root. Do /usr/sbin/lsusb as root, and its there. Do it as an ordinary user, and its not. It invites you to set permissions, without explaining how. So somehow, although YAST is supposed to set all the permissions right, it hasn't, and one has to set them manually. But where is the scanner to set its permissions, and what should they be set to? Or should I be finding the binaries of xsane and kooka and setting them to suid? Several hours now and counting.... Oh well, its how we learn. Regards, Peter
