Plug time (grin): NEW WEBSITE PORTAL FOR LINUX NEWCOMERS ANNOUNCED SUNNYVALE, CA - September 29, 1999 - As more and more industry-leading companies such as Corel Computer, IBM and Sun Microsystems back the Open Source Operating System Linux, an alternative to Microsoft Windows, a new web portal site is today announced targetting those new to the Linux and Open Source world. LinuxNewbie.com - "LNC", spearheaded by British webmaster James Green and a team of volunteers worldwide, aims to introduce the public to the new OS, and guide them through the various aspects of the system from the many situations in which Linux can be used - both in the server and desktop environments. LNC will contain regularly updated reviews and previews on current and forthcoming software, Features covering specialist topics such as networking and security, a comprehensive searchable database of problems and solutions, Opinion columns from staff and visitor-submissions, Tutorials covering popular software, a forum where new users can ask their questions and view answers over the web, a regularly updated news facility and much more. Off-topic, I know, but does anybody know of a decent web site with a guide to Sun Solaris 5.7? There are certain elements that I just can't seem to find under Solaris which are readily available under Linux and want to know if they have Solaris equivelents.. Martyn, http://www.SunFreeware.com/ has lots of Solaris Package files of various GNU utilities that are standard on most Linux distros but are lacking on Solaris. Also have a look at http://www.SolarisCentral.org/ as it has pointers to all things Solaris. scp/ssh help needed

OK this sucks big time... Here I am (right now), using scp to upload a small (1KB) index.php file to a webserver in the States run by VA (see below). I watch the initial upload, then all goes quiet indefinetly. I've tried many times without success. I've had it suggested that the server may be doing a reverse dns lookup on my, yet nslookup <myip> works fine. Any ideas, only watching a 1KB upload for more than five/ten minutes gets boring... LAN Party at Melton Grange (yes, it's ALUG-related)

This may not appear to be ALUG-related, but it is... We've got a major LAN party planned for 21/22 Jan 2000, which is a Friday and Saturday. The main games will be Half-Life (inc TFC) and Quake3, servers for which run on Linux. We're expecting over a hundred people, and expect to need a minimum of 8 servers, possibly 9 or 10. There may be an NT box required for Tiberian Sun and so forth (no Linux servers). The purpose of this mail is: a) do any of you lot fancy coming? b) do you know anyone prepared to lend a server(s)/100mb network hubs? c) are any of you prepared to help technically? Cheers, Laurie. Stupid Company Policy of the week

Well, I'm going to let off some steam. I'm on Demon, using the CWC 50p offer. I'm getting Star Office weighing in at around 70Mb. There's not much competition in the office world so I guess this is going to have to do. So I start downloading from the Amsterdam mirror. It stalls more than it comes down. I abort and try the US East Coast; this one's fast without stalling. Whoops. Netscape crashes at 15%, 3hrs 30mins to go. I go back to the website and try grabbing it again. Oh no! The webserver to manage download accounts is down. In dispair, I find sun.co.uk, a lovely fast mirror. But oh no - the Star Office download goes back to the US. Why? I try once again, and his time I'm not getting any response at all. In fact, a 503 Server Not Responding comes up. I hit reload a few times and am finally presented with a response: Your Session Has Expired. I have now written to Sun blasting them for not keeping sun.co.uk in the UK. It's diabolically stupid to maintain a mirror when critical parts are left in one country susceptable to crashes and downtime. Triple booting

Any ideas on how to or where to look for info on triple booting Linux, Win NT and Win 98? Win NT and 98 reside on a FAT16 partition on hda1. Linux has / on hdb1 with /home on hdc1 and a swap partition on hdc5. Lilo is on the first sector of the Linux boot partition hdb1 so I'm booting it with a floppy at the moment. I presume that the NT boot loader can be configured to point to the Linux boot partition but I'm not really conversant with NT so I need some help here. I don't really want to use a third party boot manager or a floppy so it's either the NT boot loader or possibly loadlin but again that's a root I'd like to steer clear of.
