Re: [ALUG] Mobile Linux, more thoughts and questions
by James Elsey 27 Aug '08

What about the iPhone? I don't have one myself, but I hear there is quite a selection of applications for it, and it has built in GPS I'd be surprised if someone hasn't already figured out how to put linux on it... -----Original Message----- From: main-bounces(a)lists.alug.org.uk [mailto:main-bounces@lists.alug.org.uk] On Behalf Of Chris G Sent: 27 August 2008 14:47 To: main(a)lists.alug.org.uk Subject: [ALUG] Mobile Linux, more thoughts and questions Having looked at the Nokia N810 (reviews etc.) I've decided it probably doesn't offer the mix I really want. In particular it lacks phone capability (i..e. it has no SIM) so I'd need to carry a phone as well as the N810 which seems a bit silly. So I'm still kicking ideas around, I'm after GPS ability (for logging and for motorbike), a mobile phone and mobile computing which, for me, essentially boils down to being able to make an ssh connection through the mobile phone data connection. A browser for Googling would be nice but is less essential. I think this probably looks like several devices with a mobile phone and a data connection at the centre. Does anyone here use a mobile phone data connection with an Asus EEEPC, is it easy to set up and usable? If it was then it gives me a much nice keyboard for ssh than any keyboard on a smartphone or whatever. Alternatively a smartphone (like a Treo 680) with ssh installed would work too, much more difficult keyboard but more portable. Any other ideas, comments, etc. regarding getting a "terminal on a mobile phone" that's usable, portable and cheap? Once I've decided the neatest solution to the above I can add a GPS logger easily enough and I suspec the motorbike GPS navigation just ends up as a separate device. -- Chris Green _______________________________________________ main(a)lists.alug.org.uk http://www.alug.org.uk/ http://lists.alug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/main Unsubscribe? Routing table via DHCP on Fedora
by Dan Hatton 27 Aug '08

27 Aug '08

Dear All, The dhcp-options manpage says `NOTE to Fedora dhclient users: dhclient-script interprets trailing 0 octets of the target as indi- cating the subnet class of the route, so for the following static- routes value: option static-routes 172.0.0.0 172.16.2.254, 192.168.0.0 192.168.2.254; dhclient-script will create routes: 172/8 via 172.16.2.254 dev $interface 192.168/16 via 192.168.2.254 dev $interface' If I suspect that I'm getting a messed up routing table (i.e. not what the DHCP server administrator intended) as a result of this, what should I do to diagnose and/or fix it? -- Thanks, Dan

Hello everyone, I've got a 19" Dell CRT Monitor... Don't have the space for it any more. It runs a pretty nifty 1280x1024, still in good working order and it's just sitting in my living room. My landlord wants me to get rid of it, anyone want it? http://www.flickr.com/photos/sionide/2801352124/ If you can come and collect it, you can have it! NR1 3AY, email me if you want it :)

EeePC battery runs down ...
by Ted.Harding＠manchester.ac.uk 23 Aug '08

23 Aug '08

Hi Folks, Knowing there are a few Eee PC owners out there, I'd like to compare notes on the following. I have a standard Eee PC 900 (Linux) with the standard ASUS battery. I've observed that if the machine is "powered off" (via the GUI: logoff -> shutdown) when the battery is fully charged, a few days later the battery may be substantially discharged (e.g. currently at 20%, on a previous occasion dead flat). Might this be due to slow internal leakage in the battery? Might the computer in fact be quietly ticking over in the background even though nominally "shut down"? Would a different battery make a difference? Just a few questions -- I'd be interested in what others think. With thanks, Ted. -------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Mail: (Ted Harding) <Ted.Harding(a)manchester.ac.uk> Fax-to-email: +44 (0)870 094 0861 Date: 23-Aug-08 Time: 18:09:03 ------------------------------ XFMail ------------------------------

CSS question, just a bug/quirk or what?
by Chris G 21 Aug '08

21 Aug '08

I wanted tables with no borders at all, after mucking around for a while with the CSS I found that:- table.docutils, td, th { border: 0 } works, but that:- table.docutils td th { border: 0 } doesn't work. According to CSS documentation those commas are wrong but they've made it work for me. Is this just a quirk of Firefox (2.0.0.12 on Linux) or am I missing something (quite likely!)? -- Chris Green

ASUS Eee PC battery replacement?
by Ted.Harding＠manchester.ac.uk 14 Aug '08

14 Aug '08

Hi Folks, Some weeks ago I bought the ASUS Eee PC 900 (Linux). Dinky little job, and works nicely. Apparently, ASUS decided to provide more beefed-up replacement batteries for the somewhat feeble one it comes with, as from June. However, I can find no trace of the actual availability of the new batteries. Even a visit to the ASUS UK website, and searching for "battery", only resulted in a long delay and then a message that their website was undergoing maintenance ... ! Does anyone have info about this replacement and, if it really exists, how it can be obtained? Ubuntu Updates
by Stuart Bailey 11 Aug '08

11 Aug '08

I have a customer with a laptop from Linuxemporium, with ubuntu pre-installed. I think it is gutsy, but will have to confirm that. She is using a wireless network (WPA-PSK), with broadband connection. The problem is with online updates. When logged in, a message informing of new updates is shown. If accepted, the list of headers downloads correctly. But, on clicking install, nothing happens. If I try running apt-get update / upgrade, update works fine, but upgrade reports that resource [ESSID xxxx} could not be accessed. However, if I run apt-get from an SSH login, or a virtual terminal, everything work fine. Any ideas what could be wrong - is there a configuration file for the updater that could be wrong. -- --------------------------------------- Stuart Bailey BSc (hons) CEng CITP MBCS LinuSoft (Owner) Linux Specialist (0845) 6583563 http://www.linusoft.co.uk ---------------------------------------- -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Program which can print a part of an image - any ideas?
by Chris G 11 Aug '08

11 Aug '08

I want to be able to select part of an image (a JPEG by default but I could convert it) and print a selected (by marquee?) part of the image. At the moment I can't find any easy way to do this either with Windows programs (I have Adobe Photoshop Elements running in Vmware) or in Linux. It seems such an obvious thing to want to do. -- Chris Green

VPN thoughts
by John Woodard 04 Aug '08

04 Aug '08

Hello list people, I thought I'd throw this one over to you for some feedback. I have to set up a vpn both locations are using Netgear DG834g routers. The main location has a Ubuntu Hardy box being used as a samber server for a small handful of Win XP/Vista and Ubuntu boxen. There is a XP box used as a print server (I know cups would be better but it's a location thing). Basically they need file shares across a vpn with printing handled locally at each location. What is the best way of attacking this, the hardware route using routers or using tunneling protocols? Cheers, BigJohn

I don't know why it should be this way on this group as > others like yahoo all go straight to the list... that's the way it > should work. To be honest that behaviour is more down to your mail client than the list, and looking at your headers you aren't using a mail client but google's webmail interface. A lot of mail clients have a reply to list button that reads the header in the mail from the list which announces it as a list and provides the correct reply address, others allow you to set a default reply address for a folder and then have a rule drop the alug mails into this folder. Unfortunately I think most webmail (inc google) lacks this functionality. The reason it is done this way is to preserve the reply-to header rather than rewriting it, this is considered the "correct" behaviour but unfortunately not all mail clients support it. Hence things like yahoo groups do it the "technically wrong" way and rewrite the reply-to header to be the list address. It has been a matter of debate on the list several times and comes up for discussion once in a while. But the general consensus each time is to leave it the correct way and deal with it at the client end.

"Googlemail" can be set up to send/copy to your normal mail client thats the way I use it, with a blind copy sent to a 'proper' email address. that way "Googlemail" acts as an extra archive and one can also copy ones email's onto a CD. Plugging in a generic MP3 player, I see that 8.04 no longer treats it as a USB drive and says it can't play what's on there without searching for codecs etc. Given that it's all in MP3 format this must be nonsense. Cheap HP server OS free
by Wayne Stallwood 23 Jul '08

23 Jul '08

Following on from a recent(ish) discussion about these. Ebuyer now have the cheap HP Dual Core Opteron servers back in stock, now at £97.86 +VAT but including a 3 year next business day warranty package. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146548 Ram is a bit lacking at 512MB but it is cheap to add more They are linux certified by HP for some flavours of Suse and Redhat so linux friendliness shouldn't be an issue and although the built in Graphics is a bit wanting they do have a full length PCI-E x16 slot to add something better so you could convert them into a reasonable desktop. The only negative thing I have to say is that the particular chip they use is (as Adam Bower has pointed out previously) known to be a bit of a watt muncher so expect a reasonable tag on your electricity bill if you use them as a home server powered 24/7. Probably an idle of something in the region of 200Watts or maybe slightly less.

ubuntu 8.04 revisited
by gizbun 23 Jul '08

23 Jul '08

I upgraded to Hardy Heron a few days ago and have two puzzles. One is that twice now I've had Network Manager error messages when I shut down, though I've changed none of the settings Bev. I was getting this on one of my machines after upgrade. The simple solution is to edit /etc/init.d/halt and /etc/init.d/reboot to remove the -i option i.e. in /etc/init.d/halt change: halt -d -f -i $poweroff $hddown to # halt -d -f -i $poweroff $hddown halt -d -f $poweroff $hddown and in /etc/init.d/reboot reboot -d -f -i to # reboot -d -f -i reboot -d -f (old lines left and commented out so that I know what I've done.) The man page states that "-i iterates configured network interfaces and brings them down before shutting down. On Linux, this is unnecessary as the kernel will do this anyway." It worked for me anyway. David Davies
