Although it only concerns a french non profit with a french company, I though you'= d be interested to hear about it. If you think appropriate to publish it=20 somewhere I would not mind, on the contrary ;-) Cheers, --- [ An online version of this release is available at http://france.fsfeurope.org/news/article2002-10-27-01.en.html ] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media contact: Lo=EFc Dachary, loic(a)gnu.org FSFE France enters Free Software Gaming Nevrax, the video game company releasing NeL under the GNU GPL decided to outsource the Free Software community management to FSFE France. The fifteen developers working on NeL at Nevrax will continue to operate under high pressure to meet their deadlines while FSFE France will be in charge of connecting them with the Free Software world. NeL is an essential component of any 3D games. It provides the 3D graphics engine, networking and artificial intelligence that are necessary to develop multiplayer online games. It ultimately intends to compete with high end proprietary middlewares and largely intersects with Free Software libraries such as Crystalspace or Ogre. FSFE France first became involved in the gaming field by helping with the release of Blender under the GNU GPL. "We are now working to make sure games can be produced and distributed in freedom." says Lo=EFc Dachary, FSF speaker, "Game developers who have the courage to endorse Free Software as a moral principle should know about NeL". Since it is released under the GNU GPL, it guarantees the contributors and authors that it won't be abused by proprietary software vendors. People are welcome to use NeL and build on it as long as they are willing to participate to the Free Software movement. Nevrax's engineers have been developing NeL during the past three years. The company was seduced by the Free Software philosphy and acknowledged that a service based business model is compatible with it. "We are about to release our first game based on NeL." says Daniel Miller, Nevrax CTO, "We need to rely on the FSFE France to interface between our overloaded staff and the Free Software community." Nevrax decided to move the NeL CVS tree and the mailing lists to Savannah, the development hosting facility of the GNU project, so that the Free Software community benefits from an integrated contributive environment. Those interested in improving NeL are encouraged to subscribe to the NeL mailing list. For more information please visit http://nongnu.org/projects/nel/ About FSFE France The FSFE France is a non-profit organization dedicated to all aspects of Free Software. Access to software determines who may participate in a digital society. Therefore the freedoms to use, copy, modify and redistribute software - as described in the Free Software definition - allow equal participation in the information age. Creating awareness for these issues, securing Free Software politically and legally, and giving people freedom by supporting development of Free Software are central issues of the FSFE France. About Nevrax Nevrax is a specialist in the development of massively multi-user online worlds and a fervent believer in Free Software. It currently has teams developing a leading edge Free Software technology platform called NeL, and a state of the art massively multiplayer online role-playing game called Ryzom. Details on NeL can be found at www.nevrax.org. Details on Ryzom can be found at www.ryzom.com. --=20 Loic Dachary http://www.dachary.org/ loic(a)dachary.org 12 bd Magenta http://www.senga.org/ loic(a)senga.org 75010 Paris T: 33 1 42 45 07 97 loic(a)gnu.org GPG Public Key: http://www.dachary.org/loic/gpg.txt _______________________________________________ Friends mailing list Friends(a)fsfeurope.org http://mailman.fsfeurope.org/mailman/listinfo/friends --__--__-- Message: 2 From: MJ Ray <markj(a)cloaked.freeserve.co.uk> To: announce(a)lists.alug.org.uk Date: Sun, 03 Nov 2002 23:17:20 +0000 Subject: [Alug Announce] Syleham Meeting Report Well, despite my protestations, it was actually a remarkably nice day to go to Syleham, with the low autumn sun keeping us warm as we looked out over the fields from the village hall. It also dazzled us, but closing the curtains soon sorted that one out! Rather a surprisingly poor turnout (and where were you?), but quite a few pieces of kit to install, fix or experiment on and quite a lot of interesting discussion. Thanks to John, John, Colin, David and Brett for turning up. Two debian installations took place, including one "bend to fit" install onto a machine that just won't boot from CD and has a processor slow enough that the install didn't finish before the meeting... here's hoping it resumes neatly! Demonstrations of DemoLinux and Knoppix were run on a Dell Laptop. To some people's surprise, they both worked fine, although DemoLinux didn't autodetect the country it was in (should it?) and Knoppix complained bitterly about trying to start OpenOffice. Both of these CDs are available to take away now, if anyone wants them. The meeting concluded with handing out of AFFS information packs (www.affs.org.uk) the ceremonial filling of the beer glass and some coloured lights and beeping as we tried not to set off the alarms as we left. The next meeting is pencilled in for King's Lynn on 1 December, if that's OK for people? After Christmas, I'd like to try to run "Welcome to Linux" sessions, but there's no replies to the thread on the main list yet... -- MJR --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Announce mailing list Announce(a)lists.alug.org.uk http://lists.alug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/announce End of Announce Digest

ADSL
by Jamie French 08 Nov '02

Hi Guys, I wondered if u would mind helping me out. Basically have a Smoothwall firewall, which works great but I have to reduce the number of PC's I have, being kicked out of my office for my new son. Been looking at routers in the price range of £100 > £150 but they don't seem to provide the flexibility of Smoothwall, for example the Solwise SAR 715 does not really provide true DMZ functionality. A router with a firewall, ids, port forwarding, dmz and nat functionality would be great, thus wondered what u guys use with your ADSL?? By the way, ditched BTO today after three days of no service, again. Migrating to Nildram :) Take care and thank you, Jami

Re: A tale about Mandrake 9 and a mouse
by David Howe 08 Nov '02

I have exactly the same problem with Mandrake 8.2 downlaod edition which I am running but only when the mouse is plugged in as USB - if I plug the same mouse in the PS2 port it doesn't happen. I have no idea why and desite paying money to join the spectacularly useless Mandrake Club thing for extra support nobody has come up with an answer yet. Dave

I have a serious problem with X (I think!) - Help!!!
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 07 Nov '02

07 Nov '02

I'm running Debian Testing and I did an update yesterday. I think one, or more, of the packages was X related. I really can't remember any more than that. One of the new packages was updated source code for my kernel which is 2.4.19. I compiled and installed that. When I rebooted and started KDE, my normal desktop, the whole machine froze after a short time. Absolutely nothing worked. I have the magic sysrq key option in the kernel activated but even that did nothing. Only a hard reset would work. I tried booting using my previous kernel with the same results so I've ruled out the new kernel. I have since tried Icewm,as it's less complicated than KDE, and it appears to work after a fashion. I am writing this with my normal email application running under Icewm. There is a 'but' of course. If I try to switch consoles using <ctrl><alt><Fn> the machine locks up immediately as before. If I try to exit Icewm the machine locks up even if I exit using <ctrl><alt><backspace>. I am assuming that this is an X problem. I have no idea where, or how, to start looking and some advice is sorely needed and would be very welcome. Sharp Zaurus for less than 300 quid
by Adam Bower 07 Nov '02

07 Nov '02

Hi all, I just ordered myself a Sharp Zaurus from http://www.expansys.com/ less than 300 quid including delivery, the best price before this was about 350 quid online and you also get 50 quids worth of free accessories atm... although this may be perhaps a stock clearance, or maybe a new model is just around the corner. I have used Expansys before and they seem quite good. Anyhow will report back with how good the Zaurus is soon, although I am going to most likely replace the Sharp Linux OS with a free one based on Debian =) Adam -- "Step away from the Cathedral, This Bazaar is loaded" jabberid = quinophex(a)jabber.earth.li

GPRS on Debian
by Andrew Savory 07 Nov '02

07 Nov '02

Hi, I finally took the plunge and went for GPRS, and thought I'd share my linux configuration experiences in case anyone else has to go through the same pain as I did! * Why would you want to do this? - Faster connection whilst on the road (up to 5x the speed of a dialup connection over a GSM mobile connection) - The geek factor * Why wouldn't you want to do this? - On most networks a GPRS connection is more expensive per mb than a dialup connection (call charges work out less than per mb charges!) - Super high latency link: don't expect to be IRCing from it, but fine for email downloading etc. * What do you need? - A computer running linux (Debian in this example) - A mobile phone with GPRS support - A mobile phone service provider, with GPRS enabled on your account I'm on O2, using a Sony Ericsson T68i over infrared to my Debian laptop. These details should be more or less the same regardless of distribution, network or phone: the only things you need to check are the "APN" (access point name, eg "mobile.o2.co.uk"), username and password, and dial string. * How? Configuring a successful computer-phone connection is beyond the scope of this. Get that working first! Once you have a working connection to your phone (eg you can set up a normal dialup connection using it), you need to configure a new ppp connection with the following two files: - /etc/ppp/peers/o2gprs - /etc/chatscripts/gprs-connect-chat File /etc/ppp/peers/o2gprs: --- begin o2gprs --- # o2 GPRS settings debug hide-password noauth connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/chatscripts/gprs-connect-chat" # The next line is the port you talk to your phone on, and may need editing /dev/ircomm0 115200 noipdefault ipcp-accept-local ipcp-accept-remote local novj novjccomp noccp default-asyncmap nomagic # The next line is your telco's username: it may need editing depending on your provider user "web" defaultroute persist disconnect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/gprs-disconnect-chat" remotename o2gprs ipparam o2gprs --- end o2gprs --- File /etc/chatscripts/gprs-connect-chat: --- begin gprs-connect-chat --- ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ABORT VOICE ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' ABORT 'NO DIAL TONE' ABORT 'NO ANSWER' ABORT DELAYED '' ATZ OK-AT-OK 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","MOBILE.O2.CO.UK"' OK-AT-OK 'AT+CGQREQ=1,0,0,0,0,0' OK-AT-OK 'AT+CGQMIN=1,0,0,0,0,0' OK-AT-OK 'AT+CGATT=1' # The next line is your dial string: it may need editing depending on your phone OK-AT-OK 'ATD*99#' TIMEOUT 42 CONNECT \d\c # prelogin # ispname # isppassword # postlogin --- end gprs-connect-chat --- Finally, edit /etc/ppp/options and comment-out lcp-echo-interval and lcp-echo-failure. Test the connection using pppd call o2gprs and watch /var/log/syslog for details. (eg use tail -f /var/log/syslog) * Other useful details You'll need to tweak your MTA to send outgoing mail via smtp.o2.co.uk (or similar for other providers, check with them for details). * Closing remarks I'd welcome any feedback from others trying to do this ... I'll eventually put this on a page somewhere (eg the ALUG site). And yes, this email is coming to you via GPRS (hopefully!). Andrew. -- All views are my own .... who else would want them?

security.debian.org
by Paul Tansom 07 Nov '02

On Monday somebody (don't have access to my logs, so can't remember who) was talking about the Debain security update for Apache and not being able to pull it from security.debian.org for some reason. The SSL update, which hadn't been announced, but was expected, was also queried - possibly by the same person --- am I being a little vague here? Anyway, I thought I'd just post to say that both are out now (well, the SSL one came out last night, I just forgot to post) and I've successfully downloaded and installed both. Have you - whoever you may be - had any success yet?! :-/ -- Paul Tansom: - contact paul(a)aptanet.com for more information Internet and Intranet Solutions -- http://www.aptanet.com/

Still stuck after Sunday
by fluff 06 Nov '02

06 Nov '02

Dear Egg Spurts - after numerous reboots, I can't get Deb3 to break out of screen lockup after some sort of resume. At LILO/Right shift the only option in "Linux". When selected, same boot routine results in two mins of screen scrool, with no option to stop, which seems to start from where we left off but followed by same stop/black screen. How do I restart the install process please? Do I need to remove previous? All help gratefully received -- David in Norfolk, UK surrounding the Suffolk peninsula ô¿ô Zippily created with Zimacs 2.12

They work via vesa for now, though, but not as accelerated as they could be. I hear talk about code in CVS for them, but evidently that's not end-user stuff now. > [...] were the first company to get all of their mainstream cards working > in Linux with full functionality. Of course, this would mean *more* natural selection of ideas, *faster* development of new features (to keep their advantage) and *better* performance for the users, but more *work* for the hardware manufacturers, rather than relying on copyright to get an above-market-value price for their work. We should not have any part of this perversion of copyright to holds back progress. That's the opposite of why it was devised. > [...] What the free software community really needs in the way of support > from the GFX manufacturing community would be the source of the windows > drivers along with the specs of the hardware. I'm not sure this would always help, as it might encourage people to repeat mistakes. Then again, experience does suggest otherwise. Apologies if any questions are stupid, but this is something I'm still learning about by asking. -- MJR

Not sure I'll make the meeting on Sunday, due to family stuff (Partner's dad's 70th), so have a good one. Most disappointed. I may be able to persuade the immediate family to pop by on our way back (if Syleham *is* on the way back to Burwell from Ipswich), but the very word "computer" brings a glazed unfocused look to Mossey's eyes, so I'm not sure. Enjoy, Jenny. :-(

I've now seen what you are saying, done "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86"and have rocketed towards using xserver-xfree86, v4.x, having xf86config-4 file, and xwindow is now working as it should. I don't care about the 3d support, the card is not for games or fancy stuff. I've got this card because it is what work gave me. Seriously - I'm sorry if I waste anyone's time on-list. All the pointers are very welcome even if I do digest them very slowly sometimes. Thanks, Jen.

Ricardo Campus wrote: "Jenny, I'll send u a copy of my XF86Config-4 and the output from dpkg -l when I get home so you can check if you have the correct X packages installed. (I also have true type fonts set up "which is nice") What I had to do to get it working from Potato was to manually remove all the X packages, then manually apt-get install the new ones (apt-get dist-upgrade shagged it up). It's a pain, but if you have a working set of packages to crib from, it makes the job a great deal easier. AFAIK, Woody still has the old X packages included, to aid backwards compatability. So it could be using the old 3.x series... they have *slightly* different package names to the 4.x series... all a bit confusing! Personally, I used the source from Nvidia's site but that's because I was using a more current kernel than Debian were offering at the time. The drivers really do make a difference. wizzzzz! ;) Ricardo" Apt-get install xwindow installed v4.x, however I still can't read an xf86config generated file, section headings aren't recognised, and I still have an XF86Config file rather than XF86config-4. And the logfile for startx shows it is still using v3. So how can I tell Woody I want to use 4 not 3? Perhaps I need to rip out the /etc/X11 directory and begin again like Ricardo has done. Temper is rising. I don't wish to play games, all I want is a screen I can have 4 little xterm windows on at a time. Bah! Thanks, Jenny.

Will I do that via apt-get remove [stuff with x before it] or just delete /etc/X11 and contents, or do i need the dreaded dselect to find out what has been put where? This sort of thing has me flapping about like it was two years ago - I can't tell whether or not part of the x system is v3 or v4. Yours Uselessly Jen.

Hi list, Has anyone any experience in using an nVidia GeForce 2MX graphics card with Debian? I did an apt-get install nvidia-glx-src but although startx apparently gets xserver up and running there is no visual on F7. (Sorry - a bit lacking in helpful info there, there is a bundle of stuff on screen comes up on the console from which I typed startx but I don't now how to trap it in a file.) How was the meeting? Most sorry not to make it. Jenny.

Woody 2. I am now doing an upgrade of w-window-system, see 3 and 4. 3. I didn't have "contrib" on one of my sources. I'll rerun update and upgrade. 4. Yes, I did recently, but see 3. I've been running xf86config and it has been generating a completely incompatible file with such sections as "drivers", and X hasn't liked it at all so I've been writing one out manually with section headings it can deal with. Having old version of xwindows explains a lot. Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes when xwindow has rocketed forward into the 21st century. Jenny.

However, apt-get says I'm already using the most current version of xfree86-common. Is it telling porkies? Thanks, Jen. (Thanks for the logfile trapping thing)

This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.alug.org.uk in the #alug channel. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server irc.alug.org.uk" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. Unix http://www.xchat.org/ http://freshmeat.net/ http://www.epicsol.org/ Windows http://www.mirc.com (loads of help with irc for newbies!)

A keen newbie on the loose
by Ben Francis 03 Nov '02

Hey there I've been subscribed to and reading messages on the Alug mailing list now for around 2 and a half months and thought it was about time I said something. I'm just about a complete newbie to Linux, my experience extends to a failed Red Hat 6.1 graphical installation - it failed because a) I didn't know my hardware well enough and b) because I didn't have a clue what I was doing and didn't know how to configure the thing once it was (semi) installed. I never actually got as far as starting X. I waited for it to start automatically when I booted after I finished the installation (I tried both Gnome and KDE on separate and numerous occasions!) but it didn't so I typed startx and it... flopped. I'm installing on a PII 300mhz box with a 4Gb hdd, 64 meg of RAM with what I thought was a pretty generic graphics card and little else. I've been using Windows for years but have wanted to get into Linux for a long time for a number of reasons - one of them is that I'd like to set up a web server I can use for development with PHP and mySQL or another database application. I'd like your advice on which distro to start with. When I couldn't install redhat I did a bit of reading and found that Mandrake or SuSe might be a good place to start, but a friend is sending me the latest version of Red Hat and Debian (which he thinks I would learn a lot from) on CD - I only have a 56k internet connection. I have a limited experience of unix commands but apart from that I really don't have a lot of knowledge on this kind of thing and feel a bit like I don't know where to start. Do you think I would benefit by coming to one of the ALUG meetings or joining an IRC session? I live near Peterborough but could probably make a UEA meeting, but travel is a problem caus I'm 16. Thanks for your time Ben Francis ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: tola ^/. "there is no spoon"
