A word of warning- don't try to install gentoo in just your evenings! I had a kernel panic, so Laurie suggested: > 9 times out of 10, that's an error in /boot/grub/menu.lst caused by failing > to point to the right place for your root partition. If it's a laptop, it's > usually a misconfigured kernel. Actually, I'll check grub first. I have a working .config file for that particular laptop (that works with the stock 2.4.18 kernel), which is what I based my menuconfig choices on. It should be fine. If these things don't work, then I will probably post the error msgs-something to do with VFS- in a different thread! In fact having read the last paragraph, I KNOW it's not pointing to the correct partition for /. I remember putting down /dev/hda3 in fstab, when in fact / is on /dev/hda5! So I probably made the same mistake in the grub menu.lst! Damn my peculiar manner of setting up partitions! Damn the *ahem* person who was distracting me at the time! So my advice should now be: don't try installing Gentoo if you don't have much time to spare, and don't try if your partner is coming round to visit. ;o) > When you get your 512k cable connection (I have a 512 cable here in my > office, and a 2meg line in my server room), be sure to rsync ibiblio. There are > about 2,500 packages now, and growing. isn't rsync'ing the whole tree a little OTT for a network comprising of 1 gentoo box, 1 ipcop box and 1 debian box? Half the time was pulling it from ibiblio (SLOOOW!) I'm getting a kernel panic... but I think the problem could be WAAAAY back in the process (the passwd command didn't work for a start). Still, it was a learning experience, which I will get right next time round... unfortunately I'm moving and will have no net access for a while.... fortunately, my new net access will be 512kbps cable! ;) And yes, linuxmail fscks linewrap. -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

FSF Award
by John Seago 10 Sep '02

10 Sep '02

Those of you who subscribe to the FSFE list will have already seen this, but as the the message itself suggests I am re-posting it here, together with the suggestion that this LUG should nominate M.J. Ray for all his efforts, hard work and financial support for the foundation of the AFFS, see: <http://www.affs.org.uk/>, as, as one of those involved in the early stages I know that there would be *NO* AFFS without Mark. From: "Bradley M. Kuhn" <bkuhn(a)fsf.org> Subject: Nominations Request for The 2002 FSF Award for the Advancement of Free Software Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2002 12:13:56 -0400 [ Please redistribute this message widely where appropriate. ] The FSF and the GNU project request nominations for the 2002 FSF Award for the Advancement of Free Software. We want to give this award to a person who has made a great contribution to the progress and development of Free Software (free as in freedom; see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html for the definition), through activities that accord with the spirit of software freedom. Any kind of activity could be eligible -- writing software, writing documentation, publishing CDs, even journalism -- but whatever the activity, we want to recognize long-term central contributions to the development of the world of software freedom. "Accord with the spirit" means, for example, that software, manuals or collections of them (online or on CD) must be entirely Free. Work done commercially is eligible, but we give this award to individuals, not to companies, organizations, or teams. People such as Miguel de Icaza, Donald Knuth, Brian Paul, Guido van Rossum, Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, and Larry Wall who have already received this or other awards for their contributions, are not eligible for the Award for the Advancement of Free Software. Among those who are eligible, the award committee will try to choose whoever has made the greatest contribution. Please send your nominations to <award-nominations(a)gnu.org>, on or before 15 October 2002. Please submit nominations in the following format: * Put the name of the person you are nominating in the email message subject line. * Please include, in the body of your message, an explanation (40 lines or less) of the work the person has done and why you think it is especially important to software freedom. * Please state, in the body of your message, where to find the software which your nomination is based on. Information about the previous awards can be found online at: http://www.gnu.org/award/ -- John Seago

Care for an ALUG meet? I think the appeal has arrived already, I see Wookey volunteering (he has a lot to do with the iPaq running a linux based speech program I brought to the last meeting) for a slot. I would like to go - I haven't been to a linux expo before. If I do I'll wave leaflets for half an hour. Registering is here: http://www.linuxexpouk.co.uk/ Adam said on IRC last night that there was an informal pub meeting next Sunday in Norwich. Without computers (gasp) and he said he'd only do a talk on apt after five pints. Or do you mean an alug meet at the expo? Jenny.

Good plan, John. Do you want to submit the nomination? There's also the ALUG support onlist and at meetings Mark has given over the years that have furthered the cause and use of free software. This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.alug.org.uk in the #alug channel. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server irc.alug.org.uk" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. GNU/Linux User Groups
by John Seago 09 Sep '02

09 Sep '02

I blundered across this: http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-user-groups.html#GHlist last night. It made me think a little. Perhaps such `purity' would be dificult to achieve for ALUG, but a smaller subset of ALUG, or Joint Group might be possible. Athough the population density of our area, and the attendance at meetings, might make any such project impractical -- John Seago

CUPS and epson stylus
by Ricardo Campos 09 Sep '02

I have had my Epson Stylus 680 (usb) set up on this computer before (redhat and mandrake). Having set up a device node as per the USB-printer howto, and set the printer up in CUPS as per the CUPS howto, I send printjobs... but nothing comes out. I'm using the same .upp driver, usb-printer support is compiled into the kernel (2.4.18)... I can't think of what to check. *highly frustrated at USB* Any thoughts? kde3 to rh7.2
by Glen Tyler 08 Sep '02

08 Sep '02

I want to upgrade kde2.2 which came with my rh7.2 installation to kde3.0 using a cd of rpms from linuxformat. The README states that this works with 7.2, but following the commandline in the README results in a massive list of failed dependencies. I think that this might be because the original rpms were not installed with the default RedHat installation. At least there are not any in the RPMS folder, and rpm -q returns that none are installed. As I need to remove the kde2.2 rpms to install kde3.0 I'm a bit stuck, hopefully I've just missed something (as usual :-)). Can anyone tell me what that something is? thanks, looking forward to 'faster, slicker, better than ever' Glen
