CNN on MS poll
by jg＠cyberstorm.demon.co.uk 06 Nov '99

06 Nov '99

Well, I'd love to see a breakdown of who's clicking those buttons, but CNN is reporting a massive proportion of people in favour of Judge Jackson's Finding of Fact in the MSvDoJ case. Quite whether the only people who can be bothered to vote on this one are in fact Open Source advocates is unclear. -- James Green jg(a)cyberstorm.demon.co.uk Site Manager jg(a)linuxnewbie.com LinuxNewbie.com LNC http://www.cyberstorm.demon.co.uk/ [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

I was walking through Ilford's shopping mall (or should I say, maul) the other day, and noticed on all the monitors throughout the complex had Windows with the "Windows have detected GMT change. Hi all, Look what I got less than an hour ago - the Premier edition of the UK's first Linux Magazine: Linux Answers. It's predictably a little thin, but since there aren't a huge number of ads in it, we'll let that pass. What's rather good about this is that is appears to be breaking a mould in the publishing industry - it *appears* to be fairly well technically proficient, even on the second page giving the reason why they say "Linux" not "GNU/Linux" throughout the mag. Loads of tutorials (mmm :), RH6.0 and Corel WordPerfect 8 on the cover, plus RealPlayer G2 and WINE bundled too. Priced 4.99, from Future Publishing. I'll be giving a fuller review on LNC soon. Sblive driver now GPL at last!
by John Woodard 02 Nov '99

02 Nov '99

I see on Slashdot that Creative Labs have finally had the wisdom to slap a GPL on their crappy Sblive! drivers announcing that they "would like to take this opportunity to ask the Linux community to help make the opensource driver better". Nice to see that pressure from the Linux community campaigning for this has finally paid off. Maybe kernel integration is now a realistic expectation in the not too distant future, one can only hope. MA FUD

I'm reading through the responses now. OK, I think comment number 71 is enough... Er, yeah, so, not one mention of praise for the article, in fact a lot of calls for staff resignations in the ed dept., no-one can believe his claim to be a "network administrator", and errily enough, a large number of responses from people who run Linux themselves. This leads me onto an interesting question: just how many Windows admins and suchlike actually have Linux installed at home? Seems to be quite a few, judging from the responses on this NT-orientated site. I'd hazard an unqualified guess that the recent estimates of Linux installations totalling between seven and twelve million is now grossely out of date. If I were to stick my neck out and give a figure, I'd say 15 million might even be conservative. Unfortuantely, its inherently impossible to give an accurate figure. > -----Original Message----- > From: Laurie Brown [mailto:laurie@brownowl.com] > Sent: 24 October 1999 17:50 > To: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk > Subject: [alug] MA FUD > > > http://www.winntmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7420 > > Total bollocks. But before I get started I'd like you lot to advise me on: - what you'd like - what you'd need - likewise for dislike/don't need I'm away this weekend from e-mail (I'll be meeting you guys!) so unless I read mail this afternoon, I'll be responding next week. SSH in User Directory
by Green, James M K 16 Oct '99

Hi guys, I'm having trouble installing SSH into my university Home Directory (~). I've got the ssh-1.27 sources, and configured with ./configure --prefix=~/downloads/ssh --with-etcdir=~/downloads/ssh/etc It builds fine, but errors on make install. Originally it failed because --with-etcdir specified hasd no effect in the Makefile, so I manually edited it so that all paths were ~/downloads/ssh and then re-ran it, but once again I get an error, this time: [ ... ] chmod 755 ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1 chmod: ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1: No such file or directory make: [install] Error 1 (ignored) chmod 755 ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh chmod: ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh: No such file or directory make: [install] Error 1 (ignored) mv ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1 ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1.old mv: ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1: No such file or directory make: [install] Error 1 (ignored) /usr/bin/install -c -o root -m 04711 ssh ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1 /usr/bin/install: ~/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1: No such file or directory make: *** [install] Error 1 Of course the file doesn't exist. I just tried also configuring with disable-setuid or whatever it's called and this happens: rm -f /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1.old chmod 755 /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1 chmod: /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1: No such file or directory make: [install] Error 1 (ignored) chmod 755 /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh chmod: /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh: No such file or directory make: [install] Error 1 (ignored) mv /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1 /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downlo ads/ssh/bin/ssh1.old mv: /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1: No such file or directory make: [install] Error 1 (ignored) /usr/bin/install -c -o root -m 0711 ssh /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bi n/ssh1 /usr/bin/install: /ufs/csugc/users/jmkgre/downloads/ssh/bin/ssh1: Operation not permitted make: *** [install] Error 1 It clearly like to be root and nothing else.
