"I'm still not exactly clued in as to why we're back online, but hey, we are. Sometime saturday morning our Cisco router melted down. Ordinarily this would only be the end of the world, but none of our qualified personel were available to fix it, thus triggering the end of several nearby worlds as well. Props to Yazz, KurtG and Scott from Cisco for managing to help get us back online. We'll post more when we know it. 1.4 Where did the ip_masq_vdolive / ip_masq_quake / ... modules go? Some of them are not required, and some haven't been ported to netfilter yet. Netfilter does full connection tracking even for UDP, and has a policy of trying to disturb the packets at little as possible, so sometimes things `just work'. route on the two new boxes may not be correct, but that doesn't explain the boxes concerned not being able to see the router direct. One think you could try is to remove each of the two new machine's one at a time and see if the other one works correctly - if so you've at least narrowed things down a little. Also, is there one network address for the subnet or more than that? If more, then check that the router has the second and subsequent addresses configured on that interface. Of course another line of enquiry would be to get hold of the guy who went down there and establish exactly what he did to see if he may have accidentally misconfigured something. Steve.

from a module called inflate.c which is used to uncompress the kernel image once it has been loaded into memory. The most likely cause of the message therefore is the compressed kernel image as loaded into memory being corrupt and in the case of a kernel being loaded from hard disk the most likely cause of that is the LILO kernel image map being out of date so LILO loads the wrong disk blocks. The solution is to make sure the /sbin/lilo commands gets run between installing the kernel onto the hard disk of the newly installed machine and the reboot. Hope this helps. Steve.

encrypt passwords, or you tell linux to encrypt them, - at present I have it set so that win 98 is still encrypted (although Chris on the list has sent me a utility to turn it off) and I have the line in smbconf encrypted passwords = yes...I haven't got the link to the smbpasswd file in the conf file though....don't even know if i have the passwd file, I'll check tonight (actually have the time to poke about because - YES! - it's the weekend!). I have downloaded the O Reilly book, thanks whoever supplied the link there - I obviously haven't come to the bit about passwords yet. I may try turning the encryption on the win98 machine OFF first. So little time...... Hope I'm not bugging anyone making all these posts on one topic, BTW, not sure what the etiquette is as this is my first mailing group. :-) Let me know if I am! Jenny.

definitions in the Xfree config file that can be used when you start the X server. Another useful tip I found along these lines is for running a second X session when you have CTRL-ALT-F2'd to another console. Use: startx -- :1 (or I guess 2 if you have used F3 - not tried though!)
