Browsers segfault on "Lincolnshire"!

[Apologies if you get this twice -- initially sent from wrong email address] Hi Folks, I know the weather has been dire, especially for Lincolnshire in our region. But I didn't expect it to overwhelm a browser! When I try http://www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/ (the "Lincolnshire Echo" website) I get a segfault almost as soon as the page opens. This is with both Firefox 1.04 (2005) on Red Hat 9, and also Mozilla 1.3 (2003) on a SuSE 7.2 installation (so it's not due to anything didgy on a particular machine). Anyone else can confirm/comment on this observation? My social isolation problems not _that_ cured yet...

It appears when I was talking and thinking about depression, there was a major one about to hit WHAMMO! Have been in mental hospital and am nearly up to the end of my Section. I really intend to get myself sorted out, but it seems endless at present. I tell myself people eventually leave the ward and do not return, but it doesn't seem like that now. Ruth

Real Player

I use Ubuntu 6.06 in case that helps. Well, I have Real Player working fine for Listen Again and webcams but if I want to play any of the videos on the BBC news web site I can't. Any ideas why? I'm just curious to know what the reason might be. apt-get error: Dynamic MMap ran out of room

Our fileserver is running an ancient version of Debian:(Linux zebra 2.4.18-bf2.4 #1 Son Apr 14 09:53:28 CEST 2002 i586 unknown). I thought however it would be nice to try and install geneweb on it (if indeed this package is available for this ancient Debian). However when I try to do an apt-get I receive an error message saying that MMap has run out of room. I am a bit confused as there is about 4GB spare in /. What has gone wrong? Problem adding HP Deskjet 540 printer to Ubuntu 7.04

Hi Folks, I would like to be able to print from my new Linux PC. I have an HP Deskjet 540c connected (via it's parallel printer port) to my PC running Ubuntu 7.04. On the desktop I click on System -> Administration -> Printing. A box appears with a "New Printer" icon and I click on this. A "gnome-cups-add" box appears with a message "Reading printer database". An "Add Printer Step 1 of 3" box appears. I click on the "Local Printer" option as my printer is not automatically detected and leave the "Use another printer by specifying a port" option selected. I select "HP" from the manufacturer list and "Deskjet 540C" from the "Model" list. It responds by showing "hpijs" as the suggested driver. I am then stuck. It appears I have two options. There is an "Install Driver" button next to the "Suggested Driver" box. If I click on that button a box pops up which seems to be asking me for the location of the driver (which I do not know). Alternatively I can simply click on the "Forward" button to move onto the next screen. If I simply click on "Forward" to move to the next setup screen it asks me to enter a description for the printer. I type in "HP Deskjet 540 on desk" then click on "apply". The box stays on the screen for several seconds while my PC hard disk light flashes like mad and then the box disappears revealing just the "Printers" box (which was behind it) on the desktop. This box however just shows the "New Printer" icon... I was expecting it to also show an icon for my newly installed printer. Also if I actually try to now print something from an app the only option the "Print" menu option gives me is "Print To File". It would seem that my attempt at adding the printer fails even though no error message is shown. What am I doing wrong? Sagr.

How to garden gnome?

Hi Folks, I'm looking for a bit of Gnome expertise ... Suppose I have a Gnome desktop with a number of "workspaces", say 10. What I want to do is "transplant" a window from one workspace to another under software control (e.g. a shell script). Gnome certainly has an internal mechanism for this, since if you click on the little square button at the top left of a window, you get a menu which includes options to "Move to Workspace n". Is there a way to send a code or signal to a window which would cause this to happen? A related question: can one program the opening of a window so that it is initially "planted" in a chosen workspace? Ubuntu 7.04 apt-get error when installing packages

Hi Folks, I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a PC a few minutes ago and would like to install the package "gramps" on it. Unfortunately however apt-get keeps crashing out with the following error: ian@flower:~$ sudo apt-get install gramps Password: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Recommended packages: graphviz python-reportlab The following NEW packages will be installed gramps 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 103 not upgraded. (Reading database ... dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/gramps_2.2.6-1ubuntu1_all.deb (--unpack): files list file for package `xcalc' is missing final newline Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/gramps_2.2.6-1ubuntu1_all.deb Processing was halted because there were too many errors. E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) ian@flower:~$ It looks to me like the problem is: "files list file for package `xcalc' is missing final newline" so where do I find the files list file for package `xcalc' so I can add a newline to it? minimal ubuntu based distro

Or failing that, a minimal Debian install, go for neither gnome nor kde, but instead fluxbox or windowmaker. Peter

Facebook account verification

Who was complaining last night that Facebook wouldn't verify accounts? It just worked fine over the BT Mobile (Vodafone) network for me. Greg
