beryl?

Anyone using beryl? (http://www.beryl-project.org) I saw a video of it in use on YouTube, looks really nice. I blew away Linux on my "fast" desktop in order to play games, although I managed to get most of my games running with the third-party ATI Radeon drivers, it would hang and stuff, but that's another story. I run DSL on an old P3 so I'll not be installing beryl anytime soon! :) Just wondered what others think of it? Wiki things

I respect the principle of Wiki completely, but I'd still be in favour of getting whatever controls we need in place early. But as was already said, if the sysadmins are happy, so am I :-) One thing though: call me paranoid, but what is the advantage of showing changer IPs to all registered users (in the link titles on the Recent Changes page)? Is there a differentiation of permissions that can keep them from folks who just wandered in off the street? I don't suppose a poster's IP is particularly valuable, but in principle visitors shouldn't get what they don't need. Another equally small issue: are the angle quote marks ('raquo') in the page trail a common feature of wikis? Lots of CMSs and things use them for a hierarchical list of ancestor pages, so there might be some confusion to avoid by sticking 'Your recent page views:' or something on the beginning of that line.

How to make sendmail deliver mail locally?

I have previously used postfix but, since I only want local mail delivery, thought I'd try the default sendmail configuration in Slackware. I can't get sendmail to deliver mail locally, it *always* tries to send it out. For example see the following two entries from /var/log/maillog:- Feb 26 12:31:17 home sendmail[4932]: l1QCVGAZ004932: to=maxine@localhost, ctladdr=chris (1000/100), delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:01, mailer=relay, pri=30312, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (l1QCVGhY004933 Message accepted for delivery) Feb 26 12:34:26 home sm-mta[4935]: l1QCVGhY004933: to=<maxine(a)home.isbd.net>, delay=00:03:09, xdelay=00:03:09, mailer=esmtp, pri=120480, relay=84-45-228-40.no-dns-yet.enta.net. [84.45.228.40], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection timed out with 84-45-228-40.no-dns-yet.enta.net. The first line says that sendmail accepts the mail, which is a good start, but the second is telling me that it's trying to send it to maxine(a)home.isbd.net which won't work because that tries to go to 84-45-228-40.no-dns-yet.enta.net which is my router which isn't set up to allow incoming connections on port 25. How do I tell sendmail that localhost is 'here'? Even better would be if I could tell sendmail that home.isbd.net is 'here' too but maybe that's expecting too much! Outgoing mail works fine by the way. -- Chris Green

Chris If you are going to edit the files they say you *should* do the sendmail.mc. sudo help please

I virtually never use sudo as I simply su to root and do what's needed. However I want to do a mount in a shell script that runs as me rather than root and the safest way to do it would seem to be to all 'me' to sudo a mount command. However I can't get it to work with no password, what I have in the sudoers file is:- chris home = NOPASSWD: /sbin/mount chris home = NOPASSWD: /sbin/umount ... but it's still prompting me for a password when I do 'sudo mount //bla/bla bla'. So, what am I doing wrong? -- Chris Green

Strange colour effects with graphics card.

I am running Debian Etch/Testing and using the xserver-xorg-video-nv driver for my (relatively new) graphics card - a Gainward Bliss 7300LE. The display is, in general use, perfectly acceptable but when restoring the screen after the screensaver has blanked it or switching back from a text console to the X display I sometimes get a very peculiar effect. It is almost as if parts of the display appear as a negative - white becomes black, yellow becomes blue etc. Any text appears very broken to the point that it is illegible. This only affects parts of some areas of colours i.e. an area of yellow will appear blue in the top half but yellow in the bottom half but another area of white will appear black all over. Have you ever seen a little Tux with green feet? If I then switch to a text console and then back to the X display it nearly always rights itself although sometimes two or more switches are necessary. It cannot be produced on demand. Switching consoles sometimes has no detrimental effect. Big thank you to David Reynolds and MJ Ray for their help. I've got the script working. It was the insert syntax that I had wrong. I also need to add slashes before each field is inserted and the only way I could do it with my limited PHP/MySQL knowledge is by adding slashes to each field: $title = addslashes($result[title]); $description = addslashes($result[description]); $contact = addslashes($result[contact]); $url = addslashes($result[url]); $email = addslashes($result[email]); mysql_query("INSERT INTO $table2 (title,description,contact,url,email) VALUES('$title','$description','$contact','$url','$email')"); } I'm sure there is an easier way to do it but it works! Just need to tidy the syntax up a bit and be more specific about which resource is connected to. It's kept me out of trouble for the past three days :-)
