You know, I've thought for some time that one of the difficulties that we face is that ALUG covers a very large area. As linux use spreads then perhaps we need to focus on smaller catchment areas. It is significant, for example, that the Norwich PC user group has recently held two monthly meetings devoted to linux. Of course is important to avoid schisms and splintering - or even to give the appearance of setting off alone. Within the LUG structure, is there any provision for local groups, affiliated to a regional umbrella group (e.g. a Martesham LUG affiliated to ALUG)? Just a thought thrown open for discussion. Syd

apt setup help

After trawling though the man pages for apt, apt-get, apt.conf and synaptic, I can't see how to set the system up to use a local repository. Searched the alug archives for an answer to no avail.. The packages need to be on a hard drive so that I can mess around on a box that doesn't have internet access... So two questions for the apt-experts.. What do I need to add to /etc/apt/apt.conf or *.lists to get Synaptic to use a local directory ? Do I need to auto-generate a package list to resolve dependency problems, or does apt do this without prompting ? Evening Meetings

Like some others, I find it a bit difficult to get to meetings a weekends at the moment, but there's nothing to stop those of us who do live in a local area getting together anytime to have a pint and talk shop. I've been browsing web articles on writing apps for GNU/Linux and a couple have recommended the above as a good place to start. You could try the disabling AGP to start with though, as thats only 1 line in the config file and may narrow it down a bit. Adam

Grub issues

I have a 750 pIII with Gentoo on it, got the system cheap cos i work in a computer shop. built OS, kernel and so on, but im having trouble with grub.... now, the help file said to : # grub grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) grub> quit # nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf nano> default 0 nano> timeout 30 nano> # there is a splash image here, but i cant remember the path, and commenting nano> # it out doesnt change things nano> nano> title Mp3/web server nano> root (hd0,0) nano> kernel (hd0,0)/bzImage root=/dev/hda2 nano> when i run grub> setup (hd0), i get a messages about grub.conf - a positive message. copying it to manu.lst dosent work either. when i boot, i get grub screen, as if i had run grub from the command prompt. no sign of the splash screen. i assume this is a broken config? if i then type: grub> kernel (hd0,0)/bzImage grub> boot the system will boot as normal. BTW hda1 = /boot = 50mb hda2 = / = ~19.8GB hda3 = swap = 150mb ideally i want this booting, then ill build apache, mysql, php and all the other stuff. the 20gb is temporary, will buy an 80GB and serve streaming mp3s from a website over the local lan.
