IMAP problems with Kmail

Hi Folks, I store all my incoming email on my home network's central mail server. When in my Living Room I read this email via Kmail on my laptop using IMAP. Unfortunately, recently, when starting Kmail it occasionally throws up an error message saying: "Error: The process for imap://hedgehog.noahsark.the-zub.net died unexpectedly" followed immediately by an error message saying: "The application KMail crashed and caused a signal 11 SIGSEGV. An application mostly receives the SIGSEGV signal due to a bug in the application. The application was asked to save its documents. Starting backtrace... No debugging symbols found" Arrrggghhh! memories of the Blue Screen Of Death coming flooding back from my experiences with another operating system! My laptop is quite old and slow (100MHz) and takes 1 minute 49 seconds to start up Kmail once the kmail icon has been clicked and I have noticed that this error occurs most frequently when I run the laptop using it's battery where it runs slightly (but noticeably) slower than when running off the mains power pack. I am therefore wondering if I have hit some kind of handshake timeout problem during the Kmail startup process. Do I, for example, need to somewhere extend a timeout period variable relating to the response time between Kmail and the IMAP server while the laptops processor is busy thrashing around trying to start Kmail? Has anyone else come across this error or can suggest a way to get round it? As a temporary fix I have started using Sylpheed (which I am growing to like) but Eye kneed aye spell chequer. Ian.

My Mozilla no longer does DNS lookups

Hi Folks, My Mozilla browser has suddenly, for no apparent reason, stopped doing DNS lookups. I was using Mozilla quite happily doing some web browsing yesterday evening then temporarily exited it to check my emails using Kmail. I then restarted Mozilla and, frustratingly, discovered that I could no longer browse the web with it. Every time I type in a URL it immediately comes back saying page not found. If however I do a ping to suss out the websites IP Address and type this IP Address directly into Mozilla then it finds the webpage and loads it ok. The problem still exists this morning, even though I have rebooted my PC several times in the mean time. I can of course still check my emails and ping using URLs, I can even use the Opera browser without problems; it is just the DNS lookup part of Mozilla which has stopped working. Has anyone else come across this problem? If so how did you solve it? Confused and bewildered... Ian.

I've set up wu-ftpd, and it seems to be running ok in the jail: get /home/jenny/testdoc /home/ftp/testdoc "/home/jenny/testdoc" - no such file or directory (Oh yes there is!!!) chroot jail for ftp

Hi, I'm setting up an ftp server that I wanted to run in a chroot jail. I've created /home/ftp and created the basic etc, bin, lib, pub, dev, usr directory structure with the necessary files and correct permissions on them. Now what I'm unsure of is how I tell ftp that is where it has to run from. Do I need to modify the inetd.conf line ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.ftpd to something like ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /home/ftp/usr/sbin/in.ftpd Then create the sbin directory in /home/ftp/usr and copy in the in.ftpd program? Or do I leave inetd.conf as it is and create a wrapper script. If anyone has any experience of setting ftp up in a chroot jail, I'd be grateful of any pointers to web sites, or hints..the info I've found is always somehow missing parts I need to know. I would have thought anywhere was cheaper than London - you could probably fly one round in a helicopter and save money - and it would be more accessible than London on slightly snowy day. nfs connection - CD umount problem/ WMs /Booting CDs

Now that I have a working crossover connection between two computers everything is great, the client can see the CDRom and Home directory of the server and install etc works fine. The only difficulty that I seem to have is getting the CDRom to unmount from the server. I boot the server and mount the cd, then mount the nfs directory on the client, transfer required files and unmount the nfs. If I want to change CD then I have to umount it to open the draw, but unmount always replies with 'device is busy'. The man page suggest 'a lazy unmount - "umount -l /mnt/cdrom" gets round this, but it still doesn't allow me to open the draw. Forcing it causes complaints. I had a look at Top to see what is running but cant find the cultprit there - anyone know what is likely to cause this problem and how to fix it? Also did anyone get the WindowManagers to compile from this months LXF cover CD? I have tried fluxbox and IceWm, but neither got through make - fluxbox with a 'memory exhausted' message and IceWm with a huge list of warnings and errors about the taskbar etc. I was only looking for a lighter manager than XFce..... On the subject of bootable CD linux's I was impressed with the Knoppix based Freeduc one - it is in French by default but press F2 on boot and you can choose anyone of about 10 languages - including English. Shouldn't give the CS students too much difficulty. Glen .....from Britains most remote inhabited island......

A belated hello world!

As always, I've got ahead of myself. Posting to a mailing list before introducing myself... Sorry ;-) Anyway, I'm allegedly an IT professional (hehe), mainly dealing in enterprise java developments. I've had an interest in GNU/Linux mainly Debian for a couple of years, and have installed and run it on many different boxes. i386 (SMP), laptops, powerpc, sparc, sparc64. I've mainly used it as a personal OS, not much server related stuff apart from the usual home network with the usual diald, nfs, samba, apache, php, python etc...... I have a passing interest in the BSD's (sorry) and am getting to know OpenBSD at the moment. Not sure if I can be of much help to many people, but I'll stick my oar in when I can. Looking forward to contributing... (hopefully) Andrew
