My old faithful wheel mouse gave out last weekend so I had to get a new one. The old one cost me all of GBP 1.50 at a local computer fair 3 years ago so it didn't owe me anything. I decided to be a bit less of a cheapskate this time and bought a 'more reputable' brand (wonder how long this one will last :o) ). Main problem is this one is so sensitive to the slightest movement compared to my old one. I've found out how to adjust this with the Gnome Control Centre but there doesn't seem to be anything relating to the sensitivity of the wheel. So instead of scrolling one or two lines my displays jump half a page or so at the slightest movement. Anyone know of any generic way to adjust this or do I have to review the key bindings for each app? Keith

kernel compile via rescue disk?

At the moment I have a Debian installation on a disk that is going to be moved onto a new motherboard, which has an entirely new chipset. This chipset is supported in 2.4.20, but not in 2.4.18 which is what I am running currently. The 2.4.20 sources are in /usr/src, but the need to be unpacked and recompiled. Sadly, the pc (for whatever reason) won't stay working for long enough for a compile and make-kpkg. Would it be possible for me to use a rescue disk, chroot into the existing installation (by mounting the / , /usr and /home partitions, /swap is on a different hd which I am also moving to the new mobo), run the compile from there, use dpkg to install, reset LILO, then exit? I have a feeling it *should* be possible, but I have sneaky suspicions there will be odd problems... I expect to do the following (partition names aren't exact, but you get the idea- & commans cribbed from gentoo install docs): # Mounting swap swapon /dev/hdb5 # Make directories to mount existing partitions onto mkdir /mnt/debian mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/debian mkdir /mnt/debian/usr mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/debian/usr mkdir /mnt/debian/home mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/debian/home cd /mnt/debian # Not sure why I should do this.... mount -o bind /proc /mnt/debian/proc #Actually chroot into it.... chroot /mnt/debian /bin/bash The problem I can see is whether I will be able to find the paths to gcc, dpkg, make-kpkg etc... Can anyone suggest anything I may have missed? TIA

Hi, I have just upgraded to Broadband on Freeserve. I use Mandrake 8.2 and would like to know if someone is using the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem with Mandrake 8.2 or even Mandrake 9.0 (as I would like to upgrade to 9.0 soon). A brief guide about setting it up will be greatly appreciated. Govind

once more top advice from the ALUG:-) As I write this the crossover cable that I bought is performing and I'm installing slackware from one machine to the other. Hi all, I'm going to publish this just as soon as we have the remaining dates, unless someone objects. Improvements are welcome. Note that the first Norwich discussion meeting has been pencilled in for next Sunday -- who's going to be there? Many thanks to the venue organisers (Rob, John, James) for agreeing to dates so far ahead... hopefully we can get them into all the magazines, local papers, etc and won't have to vary them too much. The extra advance warning should help with promotion and attendances, too. In other news, Peterborough LUG's meeting is this Thursday evening. They're having an "open forum" session, much like most of last year's ALUG meetings. Anyone from A47 or A17ish wanting a lift there and back, email me. --- Begin draft: The Anglian Linux User Group needs speakers and presentations! We're interested to hear from anyone who wants to speak about a project they're involved in, or some other aspect of GNU and Linux that is of interest to the rest of ALUG. It's hoped that we can have two types of talk at each venue: the first sort is an introductory type of talk, covering such things as what a piece of software or a project is, what it does, how to install it and get started using it, and so on; the second is a more "in-depth" technical talk aimed at "veteran" users who are interested in how things work and how to improve them. If there is interest, displays may also be offered for the time between talks, when practical help will also be available. The venues have different facilities, including projection equipment, microphones and stages, so please wait for your talk's venue to be decided before preparing that multimedia extravaganza. It is expected that most talks will happen at the Syleham and Elmswell meetings, while the Norwich meetings will be more social discussions. The group is also always interested to hear from people with venues available for ALUG, especially in North Norfolk or Cambridgeshire. Checking the integrity of a CD

Hi, I have recently obtained a set of CDs from a friend and would like to check their integrity against the md5 ISO checksum I have obtained from the original supplier in order to reassure myself that no errors were introduced during the burning process. Is it possible to directly check the md5 checksum of a ready made CD or do I need to use CD burner software to create an ISO image of it first and then checksum that? Ian.
