Im up for some paintball =). LOL we could hold the next meeting at a paintball game. I think we'd see even less kit at the meet ;). Anyone know of a q3 install howto just i dont want to get another copy just for Linux well if the company theat made the boxset were still around i might but as there not, pa =). What deal are NTL doing at the moment then? ive been thinking about geting it but was wondering if i need a bt phone line installed at the address, dont see why its needed but most broadband companys have it as a requirment i just want cable or ADSL not a phone line. Webcams

Just a quick update on the freebie webcam that NTL are giving out at the moment. After a snotty phone call on Tuesday, one was delivered the same afternoon. After getting the USB drivers loaded (enabling the BIOS stuff first), I grabbed a driver from http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/ - A very quick compile produced a kernel module of about 100K, and with a little work with the strip command this could probably be reduced to around 70K. "make install" does not copy the module across correctly - Mine ended up in /lib/modules/misc instead of /lib/modules/2.4.18/misc. With usbcore, videodev, usb-uhci, and mod_quickcam loaded in that order, "xawtv -c /dev/video0" produced a full colour image at approx 1fps. Downloaded gqcam, but found the image monochromatic with a distinct blue bias. All in all, quite a simple device to set up and use (not sure what for though). As you say it's a PCI modem I assume its internal, is it a so-called WinModem?, cause if so then you may have a problem. Hi , I've recently installed Linux on my computer, and when I tried to configure my connnection using kppp to get to my ISP, I failed because my PCI modem was not configured. I would appreciate if anyone could give advice on setting a dial up connection. Cheers lads.

Hello, I had been meaning to join alug for a while, but only just got round to it. Am interested in learning more about the O/S, although I first installed RH4.2 back in 98, I have been quite intermittant about developing my knowleadge, I would also like to pass on any of the small amount of knowledge I have to anyone who might need any assistance. I work in IT although unfortunatly not looking after any unices, but the bit mapped dungeon itself! Anyway thats it really. Toby

I'm about two steps from abandoning my SuSE linux install to my whizzy linuxfromscratch setup but I've hit a dead end. Exim just won't deliver mail properly... Everytime it gets mail it moans about not being able to get a lock on /var/mail/<whatever> (where I *plan* to store my messages), because of the 'permissions' and defers them. When installing exim I set up an 'exim' user and group and chown/chgrp 'ed /var/mail to that user (and the subdirectories) and in a fit of desparation did a chmod 666 without any success (that is the chmod worked but exim still didn't ::grin::) So....arrrggghhh! I've tried disabling locking altogether with no luck and I'm desperate. Can anyone help me pretty please? Cheers, BenE (also pine moans about /var/mail/<whatever> not being a 'selectable folder'. Exim now works perfectly. Also, the pine problem I thought may have been related (the INBOX folder 'not being selectable') was down to the fact that pine wants it's 'folders' to have a header at the top (oh, and the fact it needs to be a file, rather than a folder...d'oh). Quickly sorted by copying one of the folders it's creates into /var/mail and renaming it. kppp gateway problem

Hi, I normally access the internet via a gateway on my network via my ethernet card, however, I have recently had a few occasions when I needed to temporarily access an alternative ISP using a modem. To keep things simple I thought I would use kppp to setup the dial-up connection. The modem connects to the dial-up ISP ok, establishes a ppp link, and correctly modifies /etc/resolv.conf to point at the dial-up ISP nameservers, however I cannot ping, or reach anything over the link. If I run tcpdump I instead see that the data is still being routed through my ethernet card rather than now going through the modem. i.e: [ian@swan ian]$ ping 80.225.253.50 PING 80.225.253.50 (80.225.253.50) from 192.168.1.232 : 56(84) bytes of data. --- 80.225.253.50 ping statistics --- 90 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss If I run netstat I see: [ian@swan ian]$ netstat -rn Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 80.225.252.38 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 40 0 0 ppp0 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 40 0 0 lo 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth0 192.168.1.1 is my ethernet network's internet gateway machine. I have set this to "Default Gateway" rather than "Static Gateway" and have also selected "Assign the default route to this gateway". Question: What silly thing am I doing wrong (or have misconfigured) to prevent kppp changing the default gateway route from the ethernet card to the modem? Thanks, Ian.
