RH8 - ISDN

Hello, I am using an ISDN terminal from BT that they provided when I signed up gor their home highway service. It is connected to my pc via USB. I have discovered that this ISDN terminal is based on the ST-5481 chipset, wich when I was using Suse 8.1 was easy enough to configure as I just had to select the generic ST-5481 driver. I have only just started using RH8 and am unable to work out how to get my ISDN working. Obviously I would like to stick with RH8 but with no net connection its going to be hard. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

First off: thanks for the replies! Wow! ALUG'ers do it again! :) Second: I'm investigating this problem for a uni project (for my MSc), so I guess the ALUG archives are going into my bibliography! ;) so, umm... these units are *fictional* lol, sorry! :) Third: I kinda thought on scrapping the RS-232 thing, since I'm fairly comfortable with ethernet and TCP/IP, but since these units have rs-232 (and they were duly mentioned by my tutors) I thought "maybe there's a reason ppl still linger with it". My first idea was to have two ipcop (www.ipcop.org) servers(firewalls) at either end of the connection to sort out a vpn over the POTS. Luckily we are dealing with temperature ranges of 5-30, so there's no real safety issue that can't wait the time it takes to dial up! Fourth: 'tis my job to write the programs to handle this, so that's all cool. Well... of to do some planning and decide whether SSH tunnels or a VPN would be better in this case. Thanks! Ricardo

Rs-232 and terminal servers

I'm investigating a solution. Basically I have a unit that must be remotely monitored. The unit itself has an rs-232 connection and ethernet too. However, for the tiny amount of data transfer needed (it sends temperatures), the rs-232 should suffice. I was thinking that I could attach this device to some sort of terminal server and then attach the server to the internet via a free dial-up, or perhaps a 64k leased line (it needs to be constantly monitored). Has anyone done such a thing? If so, any tips as to what to use as a terminal server? I realise this might be old hat to the rest of you, but I have no experience of this! TIA Ricardo

Hi, I've just joined the mailing list. I've worked in the I.T. industry for a number of years as a programmer, designer etc. I'm currently using IBM's Websphere MQ with Java and am very interested in the concept of open source ( why give money to Bill Gates et al if you don't have to ? ) As Linux is the most popular open source OS, I thought it was about time that I learnt something about it. I look forward to participating in the group.

The other possibility is that you have to set a jumper on the motherboard to let the bios know that the memory is there. I remember struggling with this years ago, and then noticing just beside the SIMM socket there was a jumper to set the memory size. Dear All, can anyone help/put me straight on this. I have a i486 machine running Slackware 8.1. As a christmas present I bought it a 32MB Simm, it currently has 16MB installed (one module). When I replaced the 16MB with the 32MB the bios still only detects 16MB on boot and everything runs as before. No matter I thought - I have read somewhere that Linux will override such settings, but I have been unable to get the kernel (2.4.18) to do so. I read the lilo.conf man page which indicated that adding 'append="mem=32M"' to lilo would do it, but the computer would not boot after adding this. A further search of the internet produced a sort of How-to doc that lists three options (but I think is written for RedHat). The first of these is the same as the lilo.conf recommendation, the second involves giving mem sizes and start locations in hexadecimals e.g. append="mem=exactmap mem=0x9f000@0 mem=0x1f00000@100000" and the third is like the 2nd, but in english.. append="mem=exactmap mem#=640K@0 mem=31M@1M" all these end in the same result - failure to boot.
