DVD / DMA

I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following please? I installed ogle a while back but the DVD playback kept jumping. On the assumption that this was ogle playing up I installed xine, and the test script that comes with it mentioned that my DVD player hadn't got DMA enabled. following the instructions to enable it just caused my system (SuSE 8.0) to fall over in a heap. There is no problem under windows though. I assume therefore that the mobo/dvd drive can't use DMA under linux (sorry, haven't got the make/models of them). Before I go out and buy a new motherboard/DVD drive, could the fault be anywhere else? Do I need to compile anything into the kernel perhaps? If your bying new hardware you shouldnt need to set IRQ's, DMA's or ioports's. Most pci and agp cards self configure so unless you still have a isa card youll be fine. Stupid Mistake #427 (one in a series of 1000's)

Here's a neat way to trash your Debian installation. Use dselect to install and uninstall a few packages, when dselect warns you that you're about to uninstall the ncurses library just hit the return key (default answer is 'y'). Works a treat! :o( (I've also just realised that XFree86 is a pun on X386 - groan, never mind, I'll just keep banging the rocks together). Thanx girls/guys ill try it out with a second hard drive. Using the NT bootloader seems abit piontless and harder then lilo sorry if there's nothing wrong with using lilo on the win2000 mbr then itll do that and install debian or Mandrake on my second hard drive. Maybe it was the hurd that has a problem witht booting from the second ide controller... wouldnt supprise me as it cant support over 2Gb hard disc partitions, ill try installing that on the second one as well just for fun =). Ill tell you how i get on. Not sure what your problem is but I suggest you enter the SCSI BIOS at boot-up and carry out a complete low-level format of the disk from there (and verification / re-mapping of faulty sectors) if you have the time. Then re-try your installation. BTW, I always do this before a new installation in case any new bad sectors have turned up.
