Here's a neat way to trash your Debian installation. Use dselect to install and uninstall a few packages, when dselect warns you that you're about to uninstall the ncurses library just hit the return key (default answer is 'y'). Works a treat! :o( (I've also just realised that XFree86 is a pun on X386 - groan, never mind, I'll just keep banging the rocks together). Thanx girls/guys ill try it out with a second hard drive. Using the NT bootloader seems abit piontless and harder then lilo sorry if there's nothing wrong with using lilo on the win2000 mbr then itll do that and install debian or Mandrake on my second hard drive. Maybe it was the hurd that has a problem witht booting from the second ide controller... wouldnt supprise me as it cant support over 2Gb hard disc partitions, ill try installing that on the second one as well just for fun =). Ill tell you how i get on. Not sure what your problem is but I suggest you enter the SCSI BIOS at boot-up and carry out a complete low-level format of the disk from there (and verification / re-mapping of faulty sectors) if you have the time. Then re-try your installation. BTW, I always do this before a new installation in case any new bad sectors have turned up. I think one of the linux mags had an artical about wirless cards atm :). i didnt see anything about attaching external antennas though sorry. It did how every say its a download and recompile stuff setup as no distros support the newer cards verymuch/atall. Well if you recompile your kernel and leave in only the devices that are needed + turn on the arch optimizations you should be able to see the difference. I know i can on my laptop when i fiddle around with the kernel options anoth ;).But on my laptop i find kde and gnome to slow any way(iceWM is the only way unless showing ppl that linux is user freindly). Window decorations, desktop backgrounds, ... do make a differnence as well but most of it is down to ram size and what your trying to fit in there i think. Ive always found debian to run very cuclutered and things like SuSe, Mandrake(9.0 seemed better then 8.*) to be bloated. Having expressed great interest in the proposed Linux lectures my apologies for not making it to the last meeting to contribute to the discussion. (I have unfortunately just got back from being away). If its not too late to throw in an idea:- maybe materials and ideas from the LFS project could be usefully drawn upon throughout the lecture series (not necessarily the whole thing of course, but appropriate selected bits). This could cut down on preparation time and also provide a body of available, quality written materials. David Eisenhart

Hi! Im Matt, and I'm new to ALUG Hi everyone! I was wondering if any one knows about support for the "Audigy 2" soundcard from Creative Labs. Ive looked around, but can find only mentions of the "Audigy" (original). If this is out of the question, does any-one know of a soundcard which has Wavetables, MIDI and Sythesiser support under linux. Im intending to build a new PC and wish to have a fully supported soundcard so I get my moneys worth! Any help welcome Matt
