I have installed windowmaker as a window manager, but the thing is that it is started "on top" of Gnome 1.4. I tried following some advice given on the debian website, but I couldn't get rid of gnome at startup. Where do I make gdm not start so I can use wmaker instead? Thank you for ANY help, as usual. Having expressed great interest in the proposed Linux lectures my apologies for not making it to the last meeting to contribute to the discussion. (I have unfortunately just got back from being away). If its not too late to throw in an idea:- maybe materials and ideas from the LFS project could be usefully drawn upon throughout the lecture series (not necessarily the whole thing of course, but appropriate selected bits). This could cut down on preparation time and also provide a body of available, quality written materials. David Eisenhart

Hi! Im Matt, and I'm new to ALUG Hi everyone! I was wondering if any one knows about support for the "Audigy 2" soundcard from Creative Labs. Ive looked around, but can find only mentions of the "Audigy" (original). If this is out of the question, does any-one know of a soundcard which has Wavetables, MIDI and Sythesiser support under linux. Im intending to build a new PC and wish to have a fully supported soundcard so I get my moneys worth! Any help welcome Matt

Linux replacement for NetMeeting

Hi, I do not see my brother much. As he has recently brought himself his first computer I am getting him a webcam for Christmas. I would therefore like to get my PC set up and ready for the expected excited phone call and our proposed live video linkup on Christmas Day - sorry guys but this project's deadline is not negotiable ;-) My brother (who is very new to computers) will be using the webcam bundled "Microsoft NetMeeting" on his Windows only PC at his end. Will I have to also boot into Windows and use NetMeeting my end or is there a Linux equivalent (I run Debian 3.0) I can use? I also have a more computer literate friend who lives some distance away from me who runs Linux like myself. Is there a NetMeeting type program (even if it is not compatible with NetMeeting itself) which two remote Linux users can use to videoconference over the net? TIA, Ian.

Hello everyone, I have joined the list not long ago. My name is Francesco, foreign student here in the UK. I am a Linux newbie I must say, and I am desperately trying to do away with M$... I had Woody installed until a few days back on my second HDD and reinstalled it today after some serious hardware problems(all was working fine anyway until then). I have made a mistake during installation at basically "monitor setup" stage so now when the X server starts (at the login screen) nothing is displayed and the monitor goes blind just giving some frequency values and a NOT SUPPORTED message (I figured the selected resolution and frequency match cannot be handled my thge stupid monitor..). Do you know if that can be fixed without having to reinstall the whole system again? Many thanks for ANY help/opinions. RH 7.3 Install

Hi Guys, After downloading RH7.3 and conducted a linux mediacheck when at partitioning stage I receive the following error "Partition table on device sda was unreadable. Initialize this drive Yes/No." By selecting Yes the following error occured "no valid devices were found to create new filesystems". Thus the system kills sessions and reboots. By checking system messages (ctrl+alt+F4) at various points I can determine that the SCSI card and devices where detected. Though after receiving the final error messege the following system message appears a number of time "parity error detected in data-in phase". Please bear in mind this machine has been running SuSe without any difficulties. Machine Spec: Supermicro P6SBU 196MB Onboard AIC-7890 SCSI ULTRA2/LVD Seagate 9GB LVD Any help would be great as I am trying to learn this sh*t.
