UDMA 100, etc.

After my dodgy HD, I'm thinking of buying a new HD. My motherboard can only handle ata33, but I'm thinking if I invest in a new HD, I might as well get an ATA100 one and use it at the lower speed- I'll probably buy a new motherboard (&new CPU, etc) that can in a year or so anyway. kernel panic! Oh poo.

Today, as I booted my box, it said that the kernel was using the wrong compression format and halted. So I rebooted, and the dmesg came up with lots of: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Right at the end, we have: VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,0) It booted, but some files just weren't there anymore. i.e. it had mount, but not umount. So I thought, bugger that, saved the dmesg, and rebooted. I was greeted with:- Kernel Panic! VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01 It suggested to run e2fsck, so I did using a tomsrtbt rescue floppy. Fine. It 'fixed' a LOT on hda1. Reboot, Kernel Panic! no init found... SoI'm figuring that it's pretty much destroyed the data on hda1. Or, as I like to mount it, / Bugger. So I guess it's reinstall time for me, that way, I guess, I could possibly save /home . Or do people think it may be a hardware problem? Oh poo. It's possibly the easiest firewall s/w you cound ever use (i.e. takes about 30 seconds). Of course, a custom hand-written script is best, but to get a home connection going I'd highly recommend it. You'll need a 2.4.x kernel, though, as it uses iptables. Of course, it's a bit overkill on dial-up! I tend to leave mine connected from friday 6pm to monday 8am (as it's free), so I use it 'just in case'. I've been reading about linux security, and apparently the best way is to have a box acting as an interface running nothing at all except internet connection stuff, so that everything on the internal network is hidden behind it. I had dreams of turning my current cobbled-together old box at home into the firewall beast, and buying a big fast shiny new computer and running a distro on it that I can start looking at desktop stuff on - I've only ever piddled around with command line so far really apart from mozilla. Then when our primary school decides to try linux I can sweep round and show the kids redhat running word editors or whatever :-) Anyone want to buy a broken motorbike? Buyer collects (from France). Hi, Yes not being able to run setup.exe from a cd was imagined. This certainly wasn't the case with the connect 2.4 networks that I worked with anyway. Cheers, Ben

When I said the IT support branch I was talking about the IT support from the LEA most schools aren't as fortunate as mine having someone who is there fulltime just to look after the IT system most have a teacher doing it. Next time you wanna have a pop do it privately if this is wrong then forigve me but right now I fell pretty pi**ed off with your lame response. Ben
