Sundays meeting - who wanted a lift from Norwich?

Hoping to be there although I should really be doing other things. I seem to remember that someone was asking for a lift from Norwich or somewhere nearby? Or, to rephrase it, does anyone want a lift from Norwich or anywhere nearby (on the southern side of the town at least)? Syd

Meeting on 4th Nov- agenda?

What's the agenda? the http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk/ site always times out on me. Although I got MDK 8.0 up and running, I'd like to install Deb 2.2r3 (I have the disks). Unfortunately, I tried to install 2 times already- both failed for different reasons. It would be great if someone could lend a hand there. I have a 4 port hub I can bring- I really can't get away with taking the other hubs (all 40 ports worth) away from work as they're mucho £££££- specially as they're being installed on the monday. I should be able to bring a crossover cable and some other cat 5 cables, but it would be helpful if people brought their own too. I had another go this morning, having set the symlinks for asm, linux & scsi and - lo and behold - it all worked without further ado. Kernel compiled and is now installed. Even better news - now the USB camera that I pestered so many people over works with Slackware and the new kernel, too. Thanks again to everyone here who contributed to this advancement! Gerald.

Check out http://www.uk.debian.org/News/2001/20010415 it's an article on what to add to your sources.list to upgrade to a 2.4.X kernel. I've done it on both my laptop and desktop computers and they run fine now (with proper USB support! yea!). I won't include a summary as i recommend you read all the instructions listed there. A small word of warning though, the apt source is unofficial so therefore it is unsupported, but the maintainer is a registered Debian developer so it's all pretty well maintained. Locked Directories-MDK8.0- answer!!!!

ALL credit must go to Syd on this one. You're an absoloute star- there's a pint with your name on it!!!!!!! In a terminal:- su (give password) supermount -i disable umount /mnt/cdrom umount /mnt/floppy mount -a supermount -i enable (optional: it may change your FS type to "auto", so try iso9660 for CD, vfat for floppy) mount -a This did it for me. And of course:- cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak ...Just incase it balls up again! :) I suspect that supermount has problems with windows partitions- poss remove from fstab and mount manually if you want to use them? How do you set up a directory so that files being copied into it from a windows machine using a samba share will copy as read only? At the moment they are rwx- - - - - - so I have to chmod manually when a doc is copied in. I've tried to set the whole directory as 755 using the -R option, which works for stuff already there but stuff copied in afterwards is still unreadable. nb - the files are moved in by various mortal users.
