You'd probably want to be aiming for 8.10 now and there is probably an eee specific page on the ubuntu wiki (I know there is for my Asipre one netbook)
Otherwise you could look towards projects such as eeebuntu which do all the netbook specific tweaks like minimising SSD wear and changing the scheduler for one more relevant to SSD disks for you.
Mostly these are getting bits of /var into tmpfs, lowering the aggressiveness of the swap usage (if you need swap at all) and setting the kernel to use the noop scheduler.
There is also ubuntu netbook remix but that is mostly a (ghastly imo) task based front end for the desktop

As a recent proud owner of an eeepc 901, and after not too much searching and fiddling to get standard Ubuntu on it, the following combination has worked a treat for me:
1. Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 (standard desktop edition) 2. Kernel from http://array.org/ubuntu/ (to get wifi, screen etc. working easily) 3. Intrepid ACPI Scripts from http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~elmurato/EeePC/ (to get the function keys and extra buttons working)
The 900 has very slightly different hardware so YMMV, but hopefully not by much if at all ...

An alternative worth considering is the script from http://eee.ricey.co.uk/ which uses the standard Intrepid kernel and patches some userspace stuff up. There is also an installation guide there.
Intrepid has drivers for the Wifi (which 8.04 didn't) but they are a seperate package called (something like) linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7-generic_2.6.27-7.4_i386.deb which is on the CD and in the repository.
