My Slackware 11 keeps shutting itself down but I can't see why.
In /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages there are messages from apache and samba saying they're shutting themselves down because they've been told to but I can't see a reason anywhere.
It happens fairly randomly anywhere from once every ten minutes to once every several hours. It reboots all by itself and continues running.
It's not a temperature problem as the system is way below the BIOS alarm temperatures.
Any ideas as to how to diagnose this or places to look?

It *looks* as if a reboot is actually being requested somehow as there is a message in syslog about switching to runlevel 6 - wierd!

Maybe the OS has temperature levels set (checking the sensors) which are lower than the BIOS alarm levels?
Another place it might be worth looking is the automatic power management and whether you might be having power supply problems.
You could look through /etc/inittab to see if there's anything special that could trigger a jump to RL6.
But it's a bit of a puzzle!
Best wishes, Ted.

Yes, I did wonder about that but I can't get any of the Linux sensor stuff to talk to me at all at the moment.

I have apm turned off because it says it's not compatible with SMP.

Nothing odd there that I can see.

It really seems unlike a heat/power problem as using the system seems to stop it rebooting, it's *never* done it while I'm actually sitting here using it (like now), it only reboots when I go away. Maybe it's lonely!

Does pressing the power button trigger a shutdown event via ACPI on your machine, is it possible that the power button is intermittent short or even just getting stuck ?
I don't think it is a sensors thing, because presumably there would be a event logged before the shutdown if something was acting on a high temp somewhere.

Perhaps some power saving mode is trying to start and the ACPI interface is confusing this for a cold shutdown ?
sort of OT many moons ago I was troubled by a bug that I would leave my machine turned off but come home from work to find it booted up and ready to go. I went though everything I could think of..but still every few weeks the machine would be powered up by itself. Then one day whilst working at my desk I brushed the left mouse button by accident and the machine fired up. The cause....a strange (wake on mouse?) bios option and a wondering cat !

You were nearly right - see my post last night. There was a whisker of solder shorting out the reset button to the case, it occasionally moved enough to 'unshort' the button and caused a reset. I found this when I decided to investigate why the reset button wasn't working.
