Hi I'm ald0; Can anyone help me with my Ubuntu installation, I get this message "fsck from-linux-ng 2.16 /dev/sda7: clean, 129398/616512 files, 852648/2465969 blocks" & then everthing stops. Being new to Ubuntu I don't know what to do to sort it out.

Which version of Ubuntu? If it's not 10.4 beta, would you be willing to try it until the final version due at the end of the month?
Tim.
When you say stops, what do you mean? The systems freezes or what ever you are doing halts? Is it recoverable or is a power cycle required to recover from this?
What version of Ubuntu are you running? Since it says /dev/sda7 I'm guessing you have several partitions on the go, give us your drive layouts?
Where does the error occur, in a log or during boot?

Has it done this from the outset or recently started ?
There has been a lot of muttering on the ubuntu forums of late of an update that managed to not complete before triggering a reboot request. I am not quite sure what it broke but I think it was something fairly significant and systems were locking up just after the file system check..just like yours.
Might be worth searching on http://ubuntuforums.org
Chances are you'll need to boot it up from the installation media and complete whatever update failed chrooted into your installation.
ald0: You were spot on Wayne, it was caused by an update that may have been stopped before completion. I have done a reinstall & everything is up & running again. I am playing with different Linux dists on several old machines, so I may be asking more questions soon.
