I'm considering purchasing a laptop (say 15.6" screen + Intel i7 CPU type) and I would be grateful to anybody for any comment on recommended brand, model, and potential supplier suitable for use with Mint.
Here's wishing all ALUG-gers a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

I really like the Lenovo T series and run Mint on mine. They're solid, reliable and quick. I usually buy direct from the Lenovo website, but I believe there is a supplier up on Roundtree way IIRC.

Got my S/h HP at Penny Lane in Long Stratton, opposite Long Stratton Motors.

I got a built to order laptop from Anglian Internet on Roundtree way. Very solid machine has given me no problems.
You can buy one without any o/s and they knock off the cost of windows. The cost of upgrading my screen to 1920x1080 was completely offset by not having windows installed.

Similar-ish reduction from Penny Lane. Smaller one, but not insignificant one from CEX in St. Stephens Street.

Yes, I'd concur with that. I have a refurbished T430 running Xubuntu 15.10 and it's excellent.

I bought a second^h^h^pre-loved HP Compaq 2610p, and I can't fault it. I'm running Mint 17.1.
I was a bit wary, as HP flaptops don't have the best reputation for reliability, but the guarantee which went with it and its price made up my mind for me.
Battery lasts longer than any other flapjack I've had, and the whole is a handy size - smaller than your vast ones, but larger than a notebook.
I'm looking too. I haven't considered Linux much as yet in the hope that it should just go on any laptop... Shouldn't it?
Beware of the 'i7' brand, it doesn't mean as much in mobile land, some of them aren't even quad core. Google two cpus to get a comparison to see if it's worth paying extra.
I've been comparing prices on HotUKDeals and I'm probably going to end up speccing my own at PC Specialist due to my liking of SSD and RAM. And they don't force you to have Windows.

Hi
I got a new laptop from pcspecialist last year, and cant fault the machine for use with Linux.
I was originally running Manjero Enlightenment on it now, also running cinnamon, runs lovely and no issues.
They allow you to configure the machine and knock off the price of windows too.
