Web hosting

Hi Guys, Someone asked about web hosting a few days ago, sorry can't remember who, but I am currently developing a site for a customer and they use www.fasthosts.co.uk . I must admit very impressed so far, they offer hosting on M$ or Redhat, your choice and their technical support line is very good. May help, if not sorry to bother you guys. Take Care, Jamie

I had the same problems with Gentoo 1.4, the install process was totally different compared to the install instructions, and it lacked pcmcia modules, and was therefore useless for my laptop. I tried Gentoo 1.2, and assuming you have broadband, you can have it up and running in one whole day (and night). Speedtouch Modem

I have a rather odd problem using the Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem with the sourceforge USB speedtouch drivers http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouch/ Running SuSE 8.0 with the latest (and all previous versions of the drivers) I have a stable connection, until I try and listen to a shoutcast stream using xmms. In this instance the connection will usually drop within 3 hours and always within 5. Downloading large files (say an ISO) from a fast mirror presents no problems. After the connection fails there are no errors reported in any of the syslogs. I am unable to restart the connection until I reboot the machine (even after killing all relevant processes and unmounting USB etc) I have posted a message on the Speedtouch mailing list, but had no response. Has anyone experienced this, or got any ideas as to what may be the cause. The machine also dual boots XP, under XP I have no such problem so I know my DSL line/Service is ok. Any help you be greatly appreciated Wayne

Problems with CD-Writing

Hi guys, I'm having problems writting CD's (It is an IDE cd writer Acer 20 10 40 soemthing) under linux (debian3 kernel 2.4.18). I can't seem to write a CD without getting errors on it (i.e. a diff with the orginal show differences). What seems to be happening is that I'm getting buffer underrun on the drive as it stops writing momentarily. I can't see why as I have cdrecord's fifo set to 16Mb and it doesn't drop below 90%, the writer is on it's own channel and even if I did get under-run the drive is supposed to have BURN-Proof which according to cd-record is switched on. I've tried slowing down the writing from 20x to 8x and still got a bad write (although I didn't notice the drive stop writing but I didn't watch for the whole 10 mins). I've also tried turning DMA on and off by using hdparm on the /dev/hd* entires (which seems to work even though I'm using ide-scsi) and turning it off means I can't spool data quick enough for 20x anyway. I was hoping someone would have a suggestion as to what I could do to stop this happening (appart from buy scsi!). However, I can't seem to kill any of the processes or unmount the nfs mount. I've restarted nfs-server and portmap. I can't umount /mntpoint , it says : Cannot MOUNTPROG RPC: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Unable to receive umount: /ducati: device is busy It would be a shame to reboot the box as it has sat there running reliably and happily since last May. browser spoofing

It looks as if IE.. can be set to spoof by modifying the registry under W$. A lot of the other browsers can be set to spoof by modifying their .cfg or .ini type files - either through the browser or editing the file itself. Opera doesnt as yet appear to have that facility so perhaps if anyone knows of an open source proxy it might be worth seing if that can be modified to spoof. On the downside.. http://www.mozilla.org/docs/web-developer/sniffer/browser_type.html seems to be able to work out you inside leg measurement! *big* gentoo problem

Hi all, was using gentoo last night and did a emerge clean which should not remove any packages critical for operation of the machine and had it remove portage..... This has resulted in one very poorly box, does anyone have any idea how i could fix this? Is rpm included by default on the system? I can't check anything now as I am at work but I just wanted to read the docs to make sure I hadn't done anything stupid and now feel vindicated that I was not at fault. Anyhow if rpm is included in the base system would somebody mind building me an rpm of portage-2.0.38 please? If it isn't has anybody else got any good ideas? Thanks Adam

(Quick apt-get install lsof) lsof |grep ducati also hangs. Rebooting the box - *cough* *ahem* well the truth is, gawd knows what I've changed in that time.......
