I apologize for the questions showing up 3 times. I must have missed a list somewhere in changing my email address. I wasn't expecting immediate answers from anyone, I hadn't received a list that showed my posts and thought I may have typed the 'Main' address incorrectly or had a problem with my connection and it hadn't gotten sent at all. Mandrake install

During my latest attempt to install Mandrake Linux, I mistakenly opted for KDE, which my old system doesn't seem to handle (lots of harddrive noises and takes ages for anything to show). It automatically tries to load a GUI when I login, and I can't see how to revert to a command-line to try and edit some config file. Ctrl-Alt-Bckspc eventually closes the GUI but it then loads up again before I can key in anything else. I would like to use IceWM or Sawfish (less resource demanding? and WMaker didn't appear to be offered during the install). Any ideas please? (The GUI never loads fully so I can't access any config tools that way.) I would prefer not to reinstall (about 5 times now), and feel I am getting somewhere, at least in terms of basic Linux knowledge(ie noway am I going to revert to a previous OS). Fuller report on my experiences as a newbie when I get the machine to do some work! Perl problem...

Hi everyone, I want to make sure a some values are added into a table but am having some problems.. I'm trying to use the following $dbh = DBI->connect('dbi:mysql:dbname','user','passwd'); if($dbh->do("insert into <table-name> value('$data1','$data2 etc...)") == 1) { blah blah } else { blah blah } But I keep on getting an error about an undefined subroutine... help please.. Let the questions begin!!

Trying again... I'm not entirely clear on how the file/folder system works in here. Keeping in mind I'm used to using the OTHER OS, is it the same sort of structure? Where are the best/worst places to create folders so that I can remember where things are? Looks like user and home but I'd rather ask before I start trying to add folders etc... #2 - I see some programs (in a brochure that came with the user guide) that I supposedly have available to me but apparently I didn't load during the install. Can I put the install CD back in and load them now without going through the whole install again? Don't know if they'd be on the first CD or the Comm. Apps CD....hmmm......... #3 - In anticipation of installing Linux I began buying Linux Format mag and The Linux Magazine. The cover CD's, (and this more than likely has to do with my first question to some point) if I pop in the CD, then what? Will it automatically put things where they're supposed to go? From what I can gather not having tried it yet, there will be some other 'work' to do to get some of them installed too and they seem to give good directions. #4 - While reading through the user guide that came with my 'boxed set' and also a book called Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours (yeah right! *g*). When they go through different steps on how to do things it tells me different commands to type but not where or what I should be in to type them!! It seemed a stupid question so I had my fiance try finding out in the books with no luck, so I'm asking. #5 - Have you dozed off yet? lol. There's way too much "space" around my windows. Is there some way to fix this within Linux so that I don't have to keep changing my monitor settings as I go back and forth with Bills product? OK, guess that's if for today. Hope they aren't silly questions......honestly I am researching but can't get to the answers fast enough, could be just a bit excited and impatient. Maybe. Also, please tell us exactly which desktop manager you are using. i.e. KDE or Gnome. The answers may be slightly different. There are LOADS of window managers and they all work slightly differently. If you look in the archives (on the website), several people posted their suggestions. (I did I know) Downloading from the internet works the same way as it does in windows, only a little faster (I've noticed). In regards to the coverdiscs, my opinion on that was covered in a previous post. When installing programs, you can download rpm's anywhere. rpm -ivh packagename.rpm will install it and put all the packages in the right places,no matter where you downloaded the rpm files. (you need to be root to do this) You may find this handy: in a terminal type kelly@computer$ su it will ask for a password (the root password) type it in, hit enter You will get the prompt: root@computer# That's how you temporarily log in as root using a terminal. When you have finished doing whatever (i.e. installing rpm's), type exit to exit back to your normal user. If you ever need help on a command, type: man <program name> i.e. man rpm it will give you it's manual page. If you need to exit the man page, just press q (i.e. for quit). That took me ages to work out!!!! Trying Mandrakes software manager (see BJ's post) is recommended, it will download the rpms automatically, and install them too. i.e. learn to crawl before you try to run. Other than all the other suggestions people have made, I would say that maybe you just need to play a bit more, and be a little bit bolder. i.e. try these things out. If you are not logged in as root, then you can't do any *Serious* damage, and if you do, so what? Most people reinstall linux a few times when they start out- you learn from your mistakes (and I make a lot of them). Also, perhaps read one of those "Linux for Dummies" books from the library (or buy one). I always read up using those kinds of books when doing something new and then move on to more complicated books when I get the basics sorted in my head. jigdo woes

Hi all, just got back from work to find out that my jigdo download of Debian Woody CD1 has failed it says :- Aaargh - 1 files could not be downloaded. This should not happen! Depending on the problem, it may help to retry downloading the missing files. which it seems to keep trying to download the file driver-4.bin now this is a tad annoying as i can't burn the first CD, I have tried using 4 mirrors now so i feel that if the file is corrupt then somebody would have fixed it by now...
