which php version

Hullo List, I installed php-4.2.1 last week by downloading and configuring the tarball, using the - - with - options. The system is still using the old version, however: php-4.0.6. Because I've upgraded postgresql using apt-get to v7.2.1 I needed to recompile php, you see, and so thought I may as well grab the latest version whilst I was at it. How does the system know which of the php's to use? If I brutally remove the v4.0.6 directory I assume php won't work at all. I feel like I've gone back a year in time, all this newbie fumbling about. Does my question make any sense at all? Thanks, Jenny.

That's what I did...I was using testing, then MJR said to do that before woody moved to stable. Yes - I'm constantly amazed what effort people put in to this open source thing. Jen.

Hello Everyone I have a big question. I would like to come to these IRC meetings but Im using on a different server at the same time. Yeah, this could be a consideration. I'll leave it for now, however... time might tell but I may eat my words: I used www.memtest86.com (well, memtest86) on my RAM. I have 2 modules. 3 Slots. Due to rather bad design of the mobo, I had them in slots 2 and 3. It hasn't been a problem... Interestingly, in Windows (which was my only usable OS at one point), the computer would simply reboot, much as Ian described. I just put it down to W98 being crap. I still think it's crap, though. ;-) I ran the test on each module in slot 3 and they worked fine, no errors. I tried them in their original configuration. The test got stuck.(actually test 7 did). Presently, I have them in slots 1 and 3. The difference in speed is amazing. Like, it feels like the difference between my old amd k6-2 400 Mhz 64mb machine compared to this one (Duron 750, 512 MB). I am actually truly amazed at the difference.The mobo manual doesn't mention anything about a slot 1 and slot 3 requirement. Did I say how much difference it made? I'm amazed. So I'll see how stable this is. This is my first boot. I had to do a manually fsck on one partition, but I'm hoping/guessing this is just from the previous time I booted and it just fscked it all up. drive seek error....

OK, looks like it wasn't my hard drive that was the problem... Yesterday, after hours of use installing on a new HD (hours due to net install), I booted up and it worked OK. I then rebooted at one point and LILO gave me:- ERR=2 Unrecognised compression format. Halting. Another reboot booted the kernel, but it had millions of Drive Seek Ready errors and DMA errors, then halted at INIT. I checked the cables (in fact put new ones in), and noticed that the hard drive was SUPER-hot). Leaving it for 30 mins, it booted OK. Does anyone think it may be overheating? Or poss a RAM error?
