I managed to delete half my operation system yesterday

I managed to accidentally delete a lot of my operation system yesterday. Having restored it from my backups some minor problems have come to light. I use a combination of 'Find' and 'Afio' but have realised that Find does not pass empty directories to Afio thus causing some software to fail until the directories are recreated e.g. apache and /etc/apache/conf.d. Cocked up telephone DDOS?

Here's one that'll make you smile. I can't be to specific because of commercial confidentially issues. We recieved a number of support calls yesterday from private users. They had been complaining to BT about charges incurred when their computers repeatedly dialed the access number of an ISP that they didn't use (in fact most of them didn't know it was an ISP number). BT in their usual cock-eyed way had spotted that we are a customer of this ISP and told the users that it was a number assigned to our business. It wasn't, in fact it was nothing to do with us. We told the users to check for viruses. However the circumstances made us suspicious that some script kiddy somewhere was trying a sort of telephonic DDOS against the ISP. The killer is that the number used was an 0845 number. :o) Keith

So, has the author come out of the shadows yet? Even if only to admit it in private? Presumably we have access logs that can show information about who was accessing the site at the time(s) it was edited? Clearly it won't give names but ISP, site referral etc, would be interesting to know. IIUIC, anyone can add/edit the ALUG wiki pages, including people who are not ALUG members - is this correct? If so, I suggest that we review this whole policy. At the very least I would suggest a policy whereby anonymous pages are removed. Syd

Copying files with a specific extension

I have a /var/www directory which is a local copy of my web site. I want to copy only the .html files together with any sub-directories that contain .html files (retaining the directory structure), together with their files, into another directory. I've tried various incantations involving 'find' and can only succeed in copying files from the base directory. If someone can suggest a way to do this it would be very much appreciated. Linux Motherboard Recommendations.

Hi guys, What are you recommendations on rock solid motherboard/cpu combos for linux? Thinking for server type setups onboard everything is ok as long as it's supported. c compiler - command not found

Hi, I am trying to compile a very simple C program but the commands I use are not working. eg $ gcc firstCProgram.c or $ cc firstCProgram.c bash: command gcc/cc not found I seem to have some sort of c compiler on my system in the directory /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-suse-linux/3.3.1/cc1 Am I right in thinking this is a c compiler that I can use to compile my C programs? If yes, then how can I set the path so that it will work from the command line whenever I want to compile? I'm using SuSE 9.0. If this is not a C compiler after all, please tell me so and I'll install one. Regards, -- Bye, Bryce.
