[Alug]Linux IP Camera... Ideas on a postcard

All, I have often looked in awe at IP Cameras, and we have recently done a job for a customer involving some, but they are sooo expensive, well more than £150. I like the Dlink DCS 1000 et al. I would like to build one using a spare miniITX box I have and a Logitech Web Cam Pro I have USB. Couple of questions! 1. Does Linux support Logitech Web cam pro 2. Is there console web cam software that I coule use to upload to a local apache server? 3. Is there a premade distro designed for this use, or could I make one somehow? I guess the ITX box needs to do the following! 1. Support the webcam 2. Have a NIC 3. Run apache for the images 4. All run off a compact flash card, no moving parts and all that! err, I think thats it. Any how, let me know what you think. Regards, Michael

My local telephone exchange is becoming broadband enabled at the end of September and I am working on the assumption that I will be able to use it (BT's site says I MAY). I have a firewall running (Endoshield - very easy to set up) and have just changed it to Bastille which seems to be working (grc.com). Bastille recommends 'psad' which is also now installed. I had Snort and Samhain installed but do I need these? Do I need Packet Mangling enabled in the Kernel which it isn't at present? There's a story on /. at the moment which talks about a letter sent by one John Salin to the USPTO regarding software patents. The author of this article suggests mentioning this to MEPs. (forwarded mail at bottom) I've confirmed this with a phone call to the European Parliament Office in Ireland. They said that this happens when a directive is very contraversial or when too many amendments are proposed. The directive will go back to the committee stage for some more work, and a new version will go to the plenary on either 22nd of September, or early October. October is more likely. On the phone, she said that it is *definitely* withdrawn. [Alug]Norwich evening meet

A small but perfectly formed gathering - Keith, Syd, Mark and Paul. Very interesting and enjoyable natter ensued. Because of many and various other monthly events (NPCUG, RUNG, PLUG), I propose that the meets be on the seconfd thursday of each month from now on. Next Norwich evening meet on thursday 10th July. That'll be a 25 way serial port then not a parallel port. That's what they all used to look like until recently when they tend to all be 9 pin ones. Most of the pins in the 25 pin ones aren't used any more (or ever really especially for RS232). [Alug]External modem on laptop

Hi list: Any idea if you can plug a modem into a parallel port and expect it to work? The laptop in question has but one serial port, which is needed for the external mouse. The modem cable has a double-end at the laptop end, with both a serial plug that fits and a parallel that doesn't as it is the wrong gender. Using a gender-bender and setting modem port to /dev/lp0 I got no response. Jen
