OK, this is a bit off topic but does any one know where you can get decent Linux merchandise at a reasonable price, I am after a cuddly Tux amount other things, I don't seem to be able to find anything at a reasonable price. I'm going to get some better CD's today and give them a go. I managed to write a whole CD yesterday after I swapped the drives around on the IDE channels and turned on the always use DMA setting in my kernel. Although it wasn't the first attempt with the new settings. I've coming to the conclusion that it's my media that's crap. After I wrote a cd (or some of a cd) I looked at the cd under the light and I couldn't see the difference between it and a new, blank one. I'm sure you can usually see the track! I did discover that I had more luck when using Kreatecd rather than xcdroast but I don't understand why as they both use cdrecord under the hood. An interesting thing that I've discoverd about my drive is that it appears to stop writing and change speed at about 25% and 50%. Seems to be OK doing that though, guesss the burn proof is working OK. My view on this topic is that a new subscriber should be pointed towards the FAQ, a link to a guide on netiquette, and perhaps one of those Newbie guides (i.e. don't expect an answer if you give no info). In regards to off-topicness, people seem to self-regulate and move things to social when things go too far off topic. Sometimes, someone sends a mail nudging them in that direction (let's take this to social guy/gals). I have only been on the list for a year or so, and self-regulation in general seems to have worked fine. And for headers, the FAQ sums it up. For newbies especially, their LUG is essential for them to start using Linux (how many times has a newbie said "I can't get my modem working????"), so perhaps their only recourse is to use work e-mail. Or perhaps they can't afford a landline/net connection. ALUG is the friendliest LUG I have seen so far since it (as a sort of egregoric entity) doesn't alienate people. Let's keep it that way! SGI Indigo

Hi all, I have the opportunity to acquire an SGI Indigo (not an Indigo II) today for free with unknown specs (possibly an R4000 cpu) a quick search on google reveals that it will not run either Linux or NetBSD but will run Irix 6.5, can anybody think of any other uses for it? all reasonable suggestions welcome but will need them quick as it will most likely be dumped at some point tonight if I don't take it.... Well, by some strange chance I managed to get an assignment on Linux for my MSc course. ;) However, it is proving difficult to find reputable sources (i.e well known companies, academics). I've been explicitly told that "Bob's Linux page" won't be considered a reliable source of information! Does anyone know of any locations of good, critical whitepapers on Linux (such as the architecture of it, security, performance). There's plenty of good quality papers from people like M$ giving a very anti-linux view, but a desparate lack of reputable (for some reason they consider M$ reputable, but I can't change that!)sources for Linux.
