installing from cover CDs

Hi All, I know that cover CD's seem to cause much furrowing of brows but..... Although I have been toying with linux for nearly a year, I have just used RedHat up until now. So I thought that I might get a lightweight distro from the covers of Linux Format. Gentoo and The LRS distros look interesting, but how are they installed? If I burn the iso image onto CD what do I do next?. When I installed RedHat I remember that I had to make a floppy with the boot image to launch the installer, but where would I get that from for these OSs? Although I've looked at the disc and mags there does not seem to be an idiots guide to this (which is what I need). I like to find things out for myself if possible - but don't know where to go from here. what I need is a simple instruction list something like.. 1) burn the gentoo iso image file onto a CD 2) get *****.*** file onto a floppy from??? 3) boot using floppy 4) mount CD 5) start install can anyone help? Some networking questions

The story so far.... OK so as some of you are aware I have a multi box, multi OS network at home running various Unix, Win 3.11, 9x and NT systems which consists of between 2 and 8 nodes at any one time at the moment. The network will never have more than 10 boxes (rash statement I know). I have loads of questions about the best way to get this up and running so here is some info to give some background on what I have and what I need. The LAN is connected to the outside world via an ISDN router which has a fixed IP address of 192.168.0.50 the rest of the nodes have fixed addresses in the range 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.10 and a sub net mask of 255.255.255.0. The Win boxes can all see each other and can print to each others printers via MS file and Printer sharing. One Linux box can be seen the Windows boxen via a very rudimentary Samba set up but Linux cannot see, share files or print to the Win boxen. The *nix boxes can all ping one another but I don'tknow how to share files or printers between them. What I'd like to do is have one Linux box as my gateway to the net acting as a mail server, firewall and maybe a web cache for all the other nodes on the LAN and to be able to print and share files from/to any box or printer. I'm presuming that because its just a small workgroup peer to peer network that I won't be needing a DNS server an will keep the IP addresses staticly assigned. What is the best way to setup a mail server, I have multiple accounts? Fetchmail/sendmail or are there better alternatives? What is the easiest way to share files between Linux boxes? -- Cheers, BJ

xterm meta key

Please save from tearing out what little hair I have left! I'm trying to make a Debian (woody) installation let me delete the previous word in an xterm (using tcsh) by typing meta-backspace, i.e. just like the Emacs keystroke. But it's not playing ball. It's actually pretty weird as I've never had this trouble under RedHat or SuSE (or SunOS, come to that). Relevant information: o xrdb -query reports (among other things) xterm.eightBitInput: true o I have no bindkey commands in my .cshrc and no ~/.tcshrc file o A short Tk script shows that backspace generates keycode 22 I thought I'd just need to say bindkey "M-^H" backward-delete-word in my .cshrc but that doesn't work. Mandrake install

During my latest attempt to install Mandrake Linux, I mistakenly opted for KDE, which my old system doesn't seem to handle (lots of harddrive noises and takes ages for anything to show). It automatically tries to load a GUI when I login, and I can't see how to revert to a command-line to try and edit some config file. Ctrl-Alt-Bckspc eventually closes the GUI but it then loads up again before I can key in anything else. I would like to use IceWM or Sawfish (less resource demanding? and WMaker didn't appear to be offered during the install). Any ideas please? (The GUI never loads fully so I can't access any config tools that way.) I would prefer not to reinstall (about 5 times now), and feel I am getting somewhere, at least in terms of basic Linux knowledge(ie noway am I going to revert to a previous OS). Fuller report on my experiences as a newbie when I get the machine to do some work! Perl problem...

Hi everyone, I want to make sure a some values are added into a table but am having some problems.. I'm trying to use the following $dbh = DBI->connect('dbi:mysql:dbname','user','passwd'); if($dbh->do("insert into <table-name> value('$data1','$data2 etc...)") == 1) { blah blah } else { blah blah } But I keep on getting an error about an undefined subroutine... help please.. Let the questions begin!!

Trying again... I'm not entirely clear on how the file/folder system works in here. Keeping in mind I'm used to using the OTHER OS, is it the same sort of structure? Where are the best/worst places to create folders so that I can remember where things are? Looks like user and home but I'd rather ask before I start trying to add folders etc... #2 - I see some programs (in a brochure that came with the user guide) that I supposedly have available to me but apparently I didn't load during the install. Can I put the install CD back in and load them now without going through the whole install again? Don't know if they'd be on the first CD or the Comm. Apps CD....hmmm......... #3 - In anticipation of installing Linux I began buying Linux Format mag and The Linux Magazine. The cover CD's, (and this more than likely has to do with my first question to some point) if I pop in the CD, then what? Will it automatically put things where they're supposed to go? From what I can gather not having tried it yet, there will be some other 'work' to do to get some of them installed too and they seem to give good directions. #4 - While reading through the user guide that came with my 'boxed set' and also a book called Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours (yeah right! *g*). When they go through different steps on how to do things it tells me different commands to type but not where or what I should be in to type them!! It seemed a stupid question so I had my fiance try finding out in the books with no luck, so I'm asking. #5 - Have you dozed off yet? lol. There's way too much "space" around my windows. Is there some way to fix this within Linux so that I don't have to keep changing my monitor settings as I go back and forth with Bills product? OK, guess that's if for today. Hope they aren't silly questions......honestly I am researching but can't get to the answers fast enough, could be just a bit excited and impatient. Maybe.
