Right click on the applet, left click on "Remove from Panel". Gnome and KDE work a lot like windows interface-wise. Also, please tell us exactly which desktop manager you are using. i.e. KDE or Gnome. The answers may be slightly different. There are LOADS of window managers and they all work slightly differently. If you look in the archives (on the website), several people posted their suggestions. (I did I know) Downloading from the internet works the same way as it does in windows, only a little faster (I've noticed). In regards to the coverdiscs, my opinion on that was covered in a previous post. When installing programs, you can download rpm's anywhere. rpm -ivh packagename.rpm will install it and put all the packages in the right places,no matter where you downloaded the rpm files. (you need to be root to do this) You may find this handy: in a terminal type kelly@computer$ su it will ask for a password (the root password) type it in, hit enter You will get the prompt: root@computer# That's how you temporarily log in as root using a terminal. When you have finished doing whatever (i.e. installing rpm's), type exit to exit back to your normal user. If you ever need help on a command, type: man <program name> i.e. man rpm it will give you it's manual page. If you need to exit the man page, just press q (i.e. for quit). That took me ages to work out!!!! Trying Mandrakes software manager (see BJ's post) is recommended, it will download the rpms automatically, and install them too. i.e. learn to crawl before you try to run. Other than all the other suggestions people have made, I would say that maybe you just need to play a bit more, and be a little bit bolder. i.e. try these things out. If you are not logged in as root, then you can't do any *Serious* damage, and if you do, so what? Most people reinstall linux a few times when they start out- you learn from your mistakes (and I make a lot of them). Also, perhaps read one of those "Linux for Dummies" books from the library (or buy one). I always read up using those kinds of books when doing something new and then move on to more complicated books when I get the basics sorted in my head. jigdo woes

Hi all, just got back from work to find out that my jigdo download of Debian Woody CD1 has failed it says :- Aaargh - 1 files could not be downloaded. This should not happen! Depending on the problem, it may help to retry downloading the missing files. which it seems to keep trying to download the file driver-4.bin now this is a tad annoying as i can't burn the first CD, I have tried using 4 mirrors now so i feel that if the file is corrupt then somebody would have fixed it by now... Let the questions begin!!

I'm not entirely clear on how the file/folder system works in here. Keeping in mind I'm used to using the OTHER OS, is it the same sort of structure? Where are the best/worst places to create folders so that I can remember where things are? Looks like user and home but I'd rather ask before I start trying to add folders etc... #2 - I see some programs (in a brochure that came with the user guide) that I supposedly have available to me but apparently I didn't load during the install. Can I put the install CD back in and load them now without going through the whole install again? Don't know if they'd be on the first CD or the Comm. Apps CD....hmmm......... #3 - In anticipation of installing Linux I began buying Linux Format mag and The Linux Magazine. The cover CD's, (and this more than likely has to do with my first question to some point) if I pop in the CD, then what? Will it automatically put things where they're supposed to go? From what I can gather not having tried it yet, there will be some other 'work' to do to get some of them installed too and they seem to give good directions. #4 - While reading through the user guide that came with my 'boxed set' and also a book called Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours (yeah right! *g*). When they go through different steps on how to do things it tells me different commands to type but not where or what I should be in to type them!! It seemed a stupid question so I had my fiance try finding out in the books with no luck, so I'm asking. #5 - Have you dozed off yet? lol. There's way too much "space" around my windows. Is there some way to fix this within Linux so that I don't have to keep changing my monitor settings as I go back and forth with Bills product? OK, guess that's if for today. Hope they aren't silly questions......honestly I am researching but can't get to the answers fast enough, could be just a bit excited and impatient. Maybe. Kelly

Funny error message

Ran 'Links' on my web server to see some website was alive and when I quit the program.. it said: Memory leak by 28 bytes List of blocks: 0x8116438:52 @ dns.c:374 Forcing core dump Man the Lifeboats! Women and children first! Segmentation fault Woo! Oh the box is using debian, looks like they screwed up something? ;) -- Craig

>#1 Think of /home as "My Documents". Put all your data there. All directories come off of / , which you can think of as similar to c: in windoze (similar, not the same). OK - I found the new php4 directory, and also put the absolute paths for the psql.so etc libs into php.ini, and now I get the correct version and postgres support with the <?phpinfo> command. Excellent! Many thanks! Just one thing - php -v is still showing 4.0.6, even though I changed the php4lib.so module line in httpd.conf. >The latest version is now 4.2.2 ......... This leads me to a further question for the debianites: - if I had used apt-get install php4 instead of compiling it myself, how would I have passed the configure-with options to php? Setting up nVidia GeForce 2 MX400

Now that I have been running Linux on my new PC for a few days I would like to try to set it up to use XWindows. When I installed Debian I remember it saying it couldn't recognise my video card (nVidia GeForce 2 MX400) and although I have sussed out I can now run XF86Setup to try and set up XWindows all the different selections of Card/Monitor combinations I have entered have failed, even the basic VGA. The only XWindows I can get to run looks like part of a 320 x 200 screen. If there are any ALUG members on the mailing list who have managed to get an nVidia GeForce 2 MX400 video card working with Debian 2.2r4 could they please let me know what settings they used for XF86Setup. The monitor I am using is an AOC Spectrum 7V which should be able to easily handle at least 1024 x 768. Thanks, Ian.
