I was browsing in Safeways this morning when I came across an intersting article in New Scientist. It was about how the idea of Open Source software has started to spill over into other areas of commerce. An example given was Open Coke, a new brand of Cola for which the recipe is published under a licence similar the GPL. It also mentioned the OAL (Open Audio Licence) which is attempting to do something similar in the world of music. Ian

For free programming IDEs there are loads - these are what I use:- C/C++ - KDevelop (http://www.kdevelop.org) Java - NetBeans (http://www.netbeans.org) Delphi - Kylix (http://www.borland.com/kylix) There are loads more too. You'll soon get out of that Windows mindset where decent software costs more than �500. Also please hit "reply all" to include the mailing list, or just reply to the list. intro..ing myself

hello all I got a mail saying that I should write a mail saying why I'm interested in linux so here goes; I'm from Norwich, called William and am interested in linux because I use my computer a lot and so am keen to know about what OS' are out there.I use my computer for writing games, although I only started programming and using PC computer's since just before the new year (my last computer before this was a spectrum 128K, so obviously I'm having to learn a lot of new stuff). I found a linux mag with a free cd with Redmond on so I installed it.I won't be using this list much for some time until I've learnt a bit about Redmond.The trouble is I wasn't sure which modem option to choose during installation so I chose none, so I'm wondering if I can still install the modem now or if I'll need to re-install Redmond.The modem is Intel 56K HaM Data Fax Voice Modem I don't know what any of that means; I found out about it by checking (Windows was previously installed on the box it's in).If I can sort that out I be able to get the software I need and get started. Thanks for any help and sorry for asking such basic questions, Will

Converting to ext3

Hi I have recently been successful in upgrading my server to Debian unstable and converting some of my ext2 filesystems to ext3. However I haven't converted my "/" or "/boot" partitions as I am unsure that I can reboot successfully. My question then is, what's the best way of converting the "/" partition to ext3? Making sure I can get back in if it doesn't work. I am currently using the standard kernel-image-2.4.17-686-smp package which apparently uses a initrd.img file. Any ideas? Hi, I know that this is a bit off topic for the list but I am hoping that you might be able to help me. I have set up a hosting company to do a bit of PHP and MySQL hosting. At the moment I am using worldpay to bill annually but I would like to be able to offer monthly billing. Other than iBill would anyone have any suggestions. I would appreciate if you could reply off list as well as on. I don't get the all the messages because it just takes so long to get them in. I would really appreciate any recomendations that anyone has. And if anyone is interested in swopping links then I would appreciate it. Thanks for your help in advance.
