Just saw that Richard Stallman is going to be in Cambridge next Monday afternoon (25th) to give a talk about software patents. Problem with linux mandrake 8.1 box on boot

Hope someone can advise on the following. I went to boot one of our linux mandrake 8.1 boxes today and received the following error messages: Loading reiserfs module Mounting /proc filesyste, Creating root device Mounting root filesystem hda5: bad access: block=128 count=2 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 128 read_super_block: unable to read superblock on dev 03:05 read_old_super_block: try to find super block in old location hda5: bad access: block=16, count=8 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 16 read_old_super_block: unable to read superblock on dev 03:05 mount: error 22 mounting reiserfs flags Freeing unused kernel memory: 708k freed Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel I appears the partition hda5 has become corrupt somehow. Is there a way to repair it without reinstalling. I am keen to get the files of the partition if possible. There is a series of log files started called panic, which list a panic because exim.conf file can't be opened, each time at exactly when my backup is set to run. I haven't yet got exim set up correctly running and haven't had time to look at it. I've done the above to trap the error messages that can't get through. I'll keep you posted on the breathtaking results. (I assume that if the logfile doesn't exist it will be created? And I'll just blindly trust you on the "2>&1" thing.....) Thanks! Jenny.

Other than that, this says to me that there is something to do with ReiserFS (i.e. it messed up the unmounting)- hence why ME can boot and linux cannot. perhaps boot onto a gnu floppy like Tomsrtbt http://www.toms.net/rb/ and fsck hda5, although I'm not sure if it supports reiserfs, since I do not use Reiserfs myself. Hello list, Before i go to the bother of downloading this java runtime environment j2re-1_3_1_02-linux-i386.bin and installing it, can anyone tell me if there is a handy equivalent debian package ready to just rock 'n' roll? Help needed to compile a C app.

Hi Folks I'm fast running out of time trying to get a bunch of stuff ready for a conference in about six weeks time. In an attempt to convert a group of M$ devotees to the wonderfull world of penguins, I have hit a brick wall. I have a C/C++ application that I have been told will compile and run in a Microsoft environment - Whilst I can compile and test it under Linux, I don't have the tools for MS. Is there anyone in Norwich willing to attempt a compile for a W95 platform ? I have all the sources on a CD along with Tcl/Tk for the GUI frontend. I know it's a bit like asking CAMRA to drink larger.... Regards, Paul.

Yes. Excellent. Having somewhere for the 'v' option to send the output to has made the cron task happy. (As in >tar -cvzf $OF /var/www/ /home/cvs > /tmp/some_logfile 2>&1) I guess I had two ways of mending this then, what I did which was to give a file for the v output to go to, or remove the 'v' option, as someone else suggested. Now to the task of finding how to do a rotating cron thing that deletes the backup files when they are more than a week old, and my box backs up using a simple file at no cost. Unspoken dig at the extremely expensive backup software our ntserver runs. But it does have a *lovely* gui. (sarcasm intended). Thanks to all for help. Jenny.
