If you want to avoid the browser wrapping text in html the easiest way if to use the <pre> ...</pre> tags which displays any text in between "as is" - is short fro preformatted. If you are 'parsing' in log files to an html file then write "<pre>" to the output file and then copy the (I presume txt file) straight in (you might want to check for the </pre> tag and htmlise that just in case) and then slap the "</pre>" tag after it. Apache mod_perl - Does it have the perl interpreter build into mod_perl or does it load it from elsewhere

I have tried reading some of the mod_perl docs but didn't find the answer to this one... With a web server with mod_perl available, is the perl interpreter itself embedded in the mod_perl.so module, or does mod_perl.so load the perl interpreter from some external source, e.g. a libperl.so that is part of the systems normally perl installation. I am interested primarily to know if upgrading the perl version on a system using mod_perl will: a) cause the newer perl intrepreter to usedby Apache. b) break mod_perl by having perl modules that assume a recent version of the perl interpreter but actually get run under an older one in mod_perl. Does anyone know please? Steve.

Gmix and Sound Card Identification

Hi, Does anyone please knoe gmix (the Gnome mixer) determines the type of sound card installed and which controls it has? Gmix used to be identify my card correctly as an ES1371 and offer me a record level control, but not gmix thinks it is a Tritech??? and offers no such control. In the absense of the control the record level seems to be set permanently to zero! Steve.

"It depends." If you're just using the normal perl you get with most distributions, then I think mod_perl has most of the perl interpreter inside it. If you're using a perl built as the mod_perl docs instruct you to, then it's nearly all loaded in from a shared library. To be safe, recompile your mod_perl or install the two perls side-by-side. -- MJR

I'm looking for suggestions

I want to upgrade my relatively elderly machine ( dual 233 Mhz pentiums) but it will probably mean that I won't be able to use my ISA modem as there are no ISA slots on modern boards. I want to avoid using an external modem. So I'm thinking of using an even older machine as a firewall/gateway into which I can fit my modem and a network card and then connect to the internet via that. I am running KDE 1.something and use a little utility called kpppload which displays a small window showing transfer rates in figures and as a graph continuously updated. I would feel lost without this as, if transfers stop, this little window tells me at a glance that rates are down to zero and it gives an indication if transfer rates are slower than they should be. If I set up this gateway as proposed it will not have X and therefore no little kpppload window. Is there any way of displaying data transfer rates on a standard console in a similar fashion (the graph is not essential) ? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Barry Samuels

Hi Folks Reading through a source file in preparation to port the code, I find half the comments are in Italian (I think). My knowledge of foreign languages is worse than C++, so I ran some of it through one of the free translation sites. Has anyone ever heard of an SE30? It's a tiny old all-in-one mac, with monochrome display and a 40M hard drive. My bro' is interested in installing linux on it. Then using to send/ receive mail. Possible? Jen.

Turns out they're ditching that idea anyhoo, it's just going to be a Debian based *internal* fileserver, and a router for the broadband conn. As a side note, I have in my grubby little hands, an 18GB SCSI Hard drive and an Adaptec AHA-2940U2W SCSI card, only the connector on the HD doesn't seem to fit any of the cables we have. It's about 2 1/4 inches wide (5.5cm), and very thin. It's wider than a normal High Density Male 68 pin. Does anyone recognise this kind of connection?
