RedHat 6.0 image files..

Quickies time

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Hi all, Quick update: I forgot to enquire about trains last night but will do so in next 24hrs. I now have three TDK CD-R discs to master. Being on a uni NT4 machine I need .iso mages of RH6.0, Debian and Caldera so ucol has a plea for local (ac.uk) mirrors for these. Respond please! I can get more CD-Rs from my housemate, although at what price I don't know; the TDKs I got from our ESE stores cost GBP1.20 each. Rip off. Due to problems getting Apache/PHP3 running here plus university work I haven't managed much on the website as yet. Bear with me on that one; but I do at least have an ugly first draft using SSI/PHP3 which grabs /. and freshmeat headlines purrrfectly :) I may be seeing someone (another student) to come along. I forgot and told him it was Saturday not Sunday and he said he couldn't make it. I'll correct him if I see him - he's a Londoner so it would be a while-at-uni arrangement I think ;-) Oh, and could someone do a demo of GIMP at the meeting? I'm a Photoshopper and I'd quite like a conversion course... GIMP-1.1.4 crashes quite quickly here. Also, a look at X equivs of oft-used Windows apps could be useful - a feature I'd like to develop on for the website. Particular emphasis on Office apps, mail and news I think. Tin "sucks" as they say in #linuxhelp. Right, I got a few wired probs here with Linux, plus a Java assignment to do for Friday, so I'd better hop to it. Need lift for the meeting..

I'm based along the Ipswich Road and would happily throw a few pounds in their direction for petrol costs, etc. Does anybody have any copies of RedHat 6.0 burnt on a CD-ROM as yet, as a matter of interest? And me final doodah is what is currently planned for the Sunday anyway? Time to spread the word

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk I wrote this before the email flurry that just took place. Guess it's still useful, though: Dear all, There are now but five short days until our first meeting. Now is the time to spread the word and try to encourage people to come along. We need to make posters (has someone done this? We could use a PostScript file), email friends, arrange transport where needed, etc etc. I think having a rough idea of numbers and compiling a list of what equipment is being taken is a very good idea. So, here's a basic "to-do" list: 1. Email friends and ask them if they want to come to the meeting. If so, perhaps arrange to demo more than one thing on a box and perhaps arrange to car-share. 2. Email A.Savory(a)UEA.ac.uk with names and details of equipment and software to be demo'ed. Bear in mind the notes about taking power supplies, etc. I assume Laurie doesn't want us to blow the fuses, so there will probably be some restriction on how many machines are in action at once. 3. Print off a poster (file location tbc) and stick it in your office window, on a nearby noticeboard, in the back of your car, on a passing cat, whatever. 4. If you need to be collected from Woodbridge rail station, email Laurie and ask nicely. The 1205 arrival is the one for most people, I think. 5. If you can help with Laurie's ISDN+Firewall setup, email both him and Andrew. I suspect doing 5 will make 4 more likely ;) 6. Polish kit and presentation skills until Sunday. Interestingly, I've just heard that Kingfisher (owners of Comet etc) have entered the Free ISP market. Let's see if we get another Linux-friendly one... MJR. sig TBA.
