Website changes...

The web pages are now hosted at UEA to let us do horrible things with perl, php and databases etc. At the moment requests are redirected from www.anglian.org.uk, until the DNS catches up with us. Some links may not like this very much, but it should straighten out soon enough. New feature: the website's "ALUG related links" now takes you to a dynamic links page; anyone can add to it, just do a submission at: http://139.222.129.17/links.shtml (Beware - this is misbehaving occasionally, so if you see a Server Error, please be polite and ignore it!) Handy hints number one

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Just found the following today and thought some of you might find them useful: Compiling your own kernel? Already downloaded the sources for an older version in the same series (eg compiling 2.2.5 but already have 2.2.2). What you should do is patch your kernel tree. See http://linuxpower.org/display_item.phtml?id=101 Installing perl modules? Try "perl -MCPAN -e shell" and let perl take care of downloading, compiling and installing dependencies. (I found that one while installing EP - which seems similar to PHP.) -- Mark. I've been quite impressed with www.cam-lug.org ;) Seriously, there is no reason why we should detract from the LUGs which already exist in the area. It was my perception that Cambridge is the only place definitely in our area to consistently support a LUG, and that seems to be of the "a few people go down the pub" variety. Regrettably, we clash with one of their meetings, but with them holding meetings every weekend, it was going to be difficult not to. We cover a wide area, so that we can hopefully reach some sort of "critical mass" can be reached more quickly. We already seem well on the road to having a few meetings organised. And as Linux grows, hopefully we will too, but that's not the end of the story. I quite expect, that as time goes by, the larger towns and cities in East Anglia may form LUGs of their own. I would hope that we can work together, have joint meetings and so on, but you have to realise that in a mainly rural area such as this, we are never going to have 100% coverage of these "metropolitan" LUGs. I can't really see King's Lynn, where I live, supporting a LUG in the next few years. So for many people, ALUG will still be the most appropriate LUG. Finally, I hope we will be a different type of LUG, a more co-operative one. Anyone who wants to help can, as we're trying to keep the centralisation of power to a minimum. When the last two links on the website go active, any member will be able to link pages in (eh, Mr Savory? I hope that was what you were planning ;) ) and I hope everyone will have something to say. Also, I hope our events can be a bit larger scale than most of the metropolitan LUGs... -- Mark. I would say the main thing is keep the momentum going. I started the Northants LUG with a meeting of 3 people, including myself and a collegue from work ... I think you need to decide very early on about when to meet, and how often. We have a main meeting every 2 months (we have had 3 so far) - where I arrange a 'talk' to kick things off. We have just got to the stage where the people that regularly turn up would like to meet more often, so we have started a more informal 'interim meeting' in the months in between. I think you need to set the dates and stick to them, even if you only get a few people. My typical attendance is from between 5 to 8 people at the moment - but I have a few regulars and many more people on the mailing list. We meet at my house in Northampton, as I have a large(ish) lounge. This seems to work really well. I would strongly advise against doing anything that is money related - I do not charge entry, do not rent a hall, do not charge for coffee or anything - it is just completely informal. The other thing to do is get a web site quickly, and send its address to any lists of 'lugs' that you can find. Obvious ones to use : www.ssc.com/glue www.linuxuk.co.uk www.uk.linux.org www.linux.ukuug.org www.skygate.co.uk/linux.html www.redhat.com www.nllgg.nl/lugww www.lug.org.uk The last one will set up a .lug.org.uk internet domain name for you if you wish - even if you have web pages elsewhere - then he can do redirection for you. One final note - personally I would stay away from 'installathons' and advocacy - I just provide the group for existing users to come together - we are not out to convert other users on our own (yet ...)
