Weekly IRC reminder

This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.alug.org.uk in the #alug channel. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server irc.alug.org.uk" and "/join #alug". Diff SAMBA problem...

OK, I think that my previous problems were due to /home/ricardo not having the correct permissions. What is the easiest way to set up a shared dir on a linux box? where should I put it... in /home/ or /usr/share/ . If I want it available for all users to read/write to, what permissions do I need? They shouldn't need to execute programs from it, but must be able to play .avi and .mp3s from it. This dir should be available to local users running linux, as well as Windoze users over the network. That was the problem. I was so keenly observing the adage of "do not take the name of root in vain" that I had overlooked the need to be root to do serious stuff to the system. I managed to get there by myself at just about the time that you posted. I am using the new partition to creat a Linux from Scratch system. Has anyone experience of this? Dave Crease

install not recognising scsi hd controller

Hi list Idiotic question of the day. I'm trying to install debian woody onto a compaq proliant 1600, but it is falling over at the first stage of trying to recognise the hard drive. Compaq has an embedded scsi hard disk controller, which the install can't detect. Do I need to install modules from a floppy to take care of this? Thanks, Jen.
