Samba 2.2.3a-6 not showing files

I have a local guest account called winguest. winguest has a password via linux passwd and smbpasswd. I wish to share a directory called /home/ricardo/mp3 , and all the files and directories below it. At first, the directories and files were owned by ricardo, group ricardo and chmod'd 700. So... I created a group called winguest, added my normal linux user to it, and also the winguest account. I: chgrp -R winguest mp3/ chmod -R 770 mp3/ I can "see" the shares using gnomba on the local machine, but they are empty (i.e. reports as 0 files). The appropriate lines in my smb.conf are: [mp3] comment = mp3 files writable = yes path = /home/ricardo/mp3/ public = yes I suspect I have done something silly with file permissions, because in the /var/log/samba/log.pixiedust file (pixiedust being the samba server) I have: [2002/11/14 17:13:35, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(589) pixiedust (192.168.0.2) Can't change directory to /home/ricardo/mp3 (Permission denied) Using gnomba on my laptop, I get a different problem. When trying to access these files I get the following error: mounted on:>/tmp/PIXIEDUST_mp3< Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1 There is no mention of the laptop being denied access in log.pixiedust. Any ideas?

Despite successful restrarts with lilo/linux s/dselect/install, the process seems to fail when it gets to the request to acces the web to get the ibm.jdk files. I respond "no+return" but get the same loop. I have d/l the tgz files and burned to CD but can't get install process to look at cd-rom and since system doesn't seem to look at cd-rom, can't copy tgz file to /tmp! Have I invented perpetual emotion? Or as Chef Fourwalls says, "If we 'ad some eggs, we could have eggs and bacon, if we had some bacon." It also dazzled us, but closing the curtains soon sorted that one out! Rather a surprisingly poor turnout (and where were you?), but quite a few pieces of kit to install, fix or experiment on and quite a lot of interesting discussion. Thanks to John, John, Colin, David and Brett for turning up. Two debian installations took place, including one "bend to fit" install onto a machine that just won't boot from CD and has a processor slow enough that the install didn't finish before the meeting... here's hoping it resumes neatly! Demonstrations of DemoLinux and Knoppix were run on a Dell Laptop. To some people's surprise, they both worked fine, although DemoLinux didn't autodetect the country it was in (should it?) and Knoppix complained bitterly about trying to start OpenOffice. Both of these CDs are available to take away now, if anyone wants them. The meeting concluded with handing out of AFFS information packs (www.affs.org.uk), the ceremonial filling of the beer glass and some coloured lights and beeping as we tried not to set off the alarms as we left. Hi Guys, I wondered if u would mind helping me out. Basically have a Smoothwall firewall, which works great but I have to reduce the number of PC's I have, being kicked out of my office for my new son. Been looking at routers in the price range of £100 > £150 but they don't seem to provide the flexibility of Smoothwall, for example the Solwise SAR 715 does not really provide true DMZ functionality. A router with a firewall, ids, port forwarding, dmz and nat functionality would be great, thus wondered what u guys use with your ADSL?? By the way, ditched BTO today after three days of no service, again. Migrating to Nildram :) Take care and thank you, Jami
