Would the next iptables expert step forward please.

Having upgraded my Debian system to 'Testing' I am trying to move to kernel 2.4.18 but before I do that I need to get an iptables firewall set up. With my original 2.2.20 kernel I had used PMFirewall to set up my firewall. Answer a few simple questions and Bingo - one firewall and a perfectly servicable one too. Hi Been lurking for a while now on an old e-mail address but figured it was time to actually come forward and say hello. My names Darren, I live in Essex, 27. I own a medium sized web hosting company, with servers in the US all running Slackware 8, usual stuff PHP/MySQL/Perl/Apache/Sendmail or Qmail PGSQL etc.. We also have servers running Redhat on another network, these are Leased. The other ones are our own equipment, i.e. we are not a reseller as so many "hosting companies are" Just ordered a Rack in Redbus Docklands which should be live by the end of the month. The version of Slackware we use is highly customised, I have found this distro to be great as a server rather then a desktop OS. Everything about the way it boots to the way we run MySQL is "different" which is nice but can also be a nightmare sometime :) I just order SuSE to give that a go as a office desktop OS, tried Deb but didn't really get on with it. I love Linux, not even close to understanding everything about it but I can handle everytning I ever need to do with it. I have a guy that writes PureFTPD working for me on a part time basis and he knows more then I could ever hope to know. His also a hardcore programmer, his working with the PHP Dev team atm for upgrades to the new version etc.. Nice guy to have on board. Here to mix with a few like minded people and learn a thing or two. Regards Darren

Well finally after over 7 months of waiting, I finally managed to persuade a parental unit to drive me to the wonderful village of Burwell to Collect my Vaxen from Jenny. After an hours playing with her windows box to get it to log on (failed) I finally departed with two Vaxen and 5 wine bottle thingys. And in Traditional style: two Vaxes : 15 ukp ea. petrol to collect them: 10 ukp Look on my dads face when he saw the size of it: Priceless Thank you Jenny. D

MTU & TCP/IP

Is there any way to change the default MTU in Linux dynamically? (OK, I know that there *is*, I just can't work out how). Specifically, is the change system wide, or could I change it on a per interface basis? I guess I could use ifconfig for eth0, but I am unsure as to where it is set for ppp0. e.g. ppp0 (MTU=<1000) and eth0 (MTU=1000) Is there any kind of mtu learning daemon for interfaces? Yes, looks like the suitable option. I just noticed that an an MTU of about 500 produces a significant change in 'speed' over a dial-up (POTS). I didn't think it would make a great difference, but it does, esp. for loading graphics on a webpage. Utterly useless for ADSL, leased/ISDN or cable modems, but then I don't have them. thanks, off to fiddle with my ppp settings! OxLUG selinux talk 7th April

selinux talk at OxLUG - Russell Coker AFAIK this talk at OxLUG on Sunday is still on (selinux list message appended below.) A few other posters on CLUG have mentioned selinux recently. I'm certainly up for it; but have no transport at the moment. If anyone else from CLUG or ALUG would be interested in a lift and cost sharing journey - please contact me and express interest in this thread. So here's my current plans: On Sunday the 7th of April I am giving a presentation on SE Linux for OxLug (the Oxford LUG). It's an open invite, contact me off-list if you are interested in attending and I'll get you the details. Then I'm doing a presentation at OLS http://www.linuxsymposium.org/ , and after that I'll probably offer a talk for the Debian Conference 2 in Toronto (early July). I imagine that the DebConf people won't reject a talk from me on this topic. Also I have nothing planned between OLS and Debconf, so I could probably do a local LUG in the mean time. Also at OLS I would like to arrange a BOF on advanced security (where we can discuss SE Linux, GR Security, OpenWall, LIDS, and anything else that seems appropriate). This will be entirely separate from the LSM BOF. Another thing I was thinking of was an install-fest for these things. The topics of my talks will be SE Linux in general and on Debianizing it in particular (with discussion on general packaging issues that also apply to RPM or other packaging systems). Also I will discuss other related issues such as finding bugs in programs through SE Linux (which is actually a very trivial thing but gets people's attention). The balance of the various items I talk about will depend on what I expect the audience wants, and can change during the talk in response to questions (I prefer a very interactive format for my presentations). I've agreed in concept to give a talk for the Nederlandse Linux Gebruikers Groep http://www.nllgg.nl/ , but have not been able to arrange a date yet because of my schedule and their schedule not matching well. I'll also offer talks to any other groups that meet in the center of the Netherlands (where I live), and I'll consider other European countries. I'll be in Australia in May to get married, due to this and the talks I have got planned already I can't arrange anything else before the August. The only possible exception is something in Canada the week after OLS which doesn't involve incurring any expenses for me. At the moment I can't arrange anything in August or later because it's too far ahead and I'm organizing too many other things at the moment and can't deal with that too. (I'm one of the greatest fans of Spinal Tap) <cough> And of course I'll write it up for the ALUG site-I'll be able to compare the install process with debians as I am dual-booting that machine.
