Evil, huh? ;-) I tried Zipslack and Phatlinux before any other- the only real bonus is that you don't have to get confused with partitions etc. I didn't really find them more accessable than a normal distro that sets X up for you (or helps you along!). You need to have the documentation handy too-it's probably harder for us to print that out than it is to do CD's. I think one thing that puts newbies off is: I've got this command line- now what? Anyone got one of those SUSE live evaluation CD's? I've never used one, but the concept of playing around in a Linux distro purely off a CD (without having to play with your HD) makes trying it out a lot easier. As a related point, I suspect if people turn up, some may not bring their computers (they *are* a pain to lug around), so maybe we could have some install discs on offer? Plenty of us could put the first CD of (insert distro's name here) on a CD-R, and there's plenty of Debians CD's bandying about. Perhaps we could do a 3 disc pack for a small fee- like 1 Debian, 1 Redhat, 1 Slackware, just so that we present an offer of several distros so people can try them out. (I'm all for choice rather than forcing 1 distro on a newbie) I know Martyn had some on offer for cheap a while back (in rather spiffy cases, might I add). Having upgraded my Debian system to 'Testing' I am trying to move to kernel 2.4.18 but before I do that I need to get an iptables firewall set up. With my original 2.2.20 kernel I had used PMFirewall to set up my firewall. Answer a few simple questions and Bingo - one firewall and a perfectly servicable one too. I am trying to use Endoshield in the same way but have recompiled my kernel with the relevant bits included I get the following when depmod is run: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_REJECT.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_filter.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_mangle.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_nat.o I have never had unresolved symbols after compiling a kernel until now. My last info was a little incorrect. My /etc/ppp/options file reads: mtu 576 mru 512 lock Since the MRU needs to be less than the MTU. (essentially MTU- header size). Actually, I have noticed that I connect quicker as well as view pages quicker. If you remember seeing those dreadful adverts for windoze users saying "speed up your modem", this is essentially what those programs do. They also usually nag you with popups as well, though! The script is likely calling for modules, if iptables was compiled in, these modules won't exist.
