Btw, this what I normally do on most machines $ apt-get update $ apt-get upgrade then $ apt-get dist-upgrade Works for me 100% all the time for some weird reasons. I must been doing something right... Please ignore my request for help, I have recompiled my kernel, deleted the existing /etc/printcap and re-run apsfilter setup, and somehow managed to get everything working. Now all I have to do is work out what went wrong the first time! -- John Seago

debian upgrade woes

Oh, it's hard to say where to start on this one.... I upgraded from Debian 2.2r3 to testing (woody) and am having the following problems since my apt-get dist-upgrade. 1st off, it's screwed my keymap, so I cannot seem to find a combination to produce the pipe symobol | (very annoying!) 2nd, it (rather predictably) screwed my X configuration. It seems that X4.1.0 no longer supports the S3 server. (mine's a S3 trio 64+ to be exact). However, dpkg -l shows that I have two xserver-common packages, one 3.3.6, one 4.1.0 . the xserver-s3 package is still version 3.3.6, as is xserver -vga. There may be others, since I cannot dpkg -l | more ! XF86Config brings no joy- it appears to produce a 3.3.6 style config, and XF86Setup segfaults immediately. I'm new to the debian packaging system, so erm... help???? My first choice is to fix the console's keymap. Then I probably want to uninstall X completely and grab Xfree86 3.3.6 of my install CD's again, and then resolving the conflicts this will cause is another question entirely.... *eep* Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

Unfortunatly, stable softwares are way behind the latest. So the path goes like this: Stable > Testing > Unstable As you know already you switched to Testing ;) To update to the latest packages, do: $ apt-get update then $ apt-get upgrade (most people do apt-get dist-upgrade, it is sometimes well known to screw up big time..) > My first choice is to fix the console's keymap. I made an attempt to transfer my archive to a larger partition, somewhere in the process of which partition was which, I managed to reformat the wrong partition and lost all my data, (luckily my address book was in the process of being sent back to me by Email). Having through incompetance messed things up, I reinstalled tidying up my partitions at the same time. Having got everything back to normal I went through the same process of setting up Apsfilter that I used succesfully last time, but on trying to produce a test page, or print from it I get `deamon not present' . I need to restart the process but despite searching with Google, and reading the manual I can't find a way to do this that I understand, Any help will be greatly appreciated. -- John Seago

'by putting in a crappy old IDE disk that contained /boot and the swap partition, and used the raid for everything else. It's been running 3 weeks without problems (well no ones asked me to mend it!)' --------------- you may find that using a crappy old IDE may slow the system down considerably if it starts paging a lot. You might find it interesting to make a swap partition on your big disk and then try doing something that swaps a lot to test which swap is faster - worth an afternoons playing as it can make a hell of a difference! Red Hat 7.0 is mad about the number "40"

Hi all, I've just installed RedHat 7.0 On my 256MB-RAM 1200MHZ-AMD-ATHLON-TBIRD 38.9GB-HDD. When I rebooted, 40 cept on flashing across the screen. Nothing happened after 20mins, so I installed SuSE 8.0 over it. Anybody know how to stop those 40s? (They came up as soon as LILO started). --- DougT
