Help with search & replace

Hi Folks I am in need of some help - I have a large number of small text files that need to be scanned and one specific phrase replaced at each occurrence excluding the first line (which may or may not contain the offending words). I suspect that something like perl may be the most suitable tool for the task in hand. But I know nothing about it.... Just to add to the problem, the files are scattered across multiple directories and the key phrase may span two lines. Regards, Paul.

I understand that TFT monitors have a fixed resolution - say 1024x768 - and can't scale to anything else. What's probably happening is that X is trying to start with a different res so your monitor ignores it. The solution is to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (same file without -4 is for X < 4.0.0) and make the 'Display' things in the 'Screen' section look like this: SubSection "Display" Depth 1 Modes "1024x768" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" EndSubSection You should probably leave in the other depths, but depth 24 is the one you're most likely using. At the moment, you probably have some other res' on the 'Modes' lines - remove all but the one your monitor supports. Bingo! The blind leads the way. Alexis

"Compiled HTML file" (.chm) ???

A certain Windows application has a "Help" resource which, when opened in Windows, shows up as an indexed series of help pages. Its "properties" describe is a "Compiled HTML file", and it has extension ".CHM" When examined, it contains a series of blocks of text interspersed with binary codes. QUESTION: Does anyone know of any Linux resource which can read this? Debian discover and CD request

Hi all... do the debianites on the list have any hints/tips/links about using the "discover" package to detect hardware? Is it safe enough to use on my next conversion? Also, can someone bring me a debian install CD or two to the install day? I can offer media and/or money in return. i386 and if it includes PGI so much the better... Right, now to install the popularity-contest...

Can someone help with an audio problem

I have just installed KMidi. I can play midi files as Root but if I try as a user I get "Can't open output device". All audio devices in /dev are set rw for owner and rw for group 'audio'. My user is in the 'audio' group. What seems strange to me is that apparently KMidi is a front end to Timidity and I can play midi files using Timidity as a user. I've run out of ideas. Anyone? Redhat 7.3 laptop install problems!

Hi, I have been trying to install Redhat 7.3 on my Compaq laptop. However, when I select the installation option I want (e.g. text) the installation fails getting as far as the USB probing. I have taken a look at various sites and they suggest using the option linux nousb when installing, but this fails too as does noprobe etc. Can anybody help me with this or am I destined to use 7.0 that I have managed to install? Simon

You don't give quite enough of a spec to choose the best tool but any of "gawk", "sed", "perl" would do it. Decompose the problem into smaller sub-problems & make a tool which will meet each sub-objective - then string them all together in a shell script. Thus using "find" with the appropriate args might well find all of the files you need to act on and pipe their names into "xargs" or a script of your own. My preference would probably be "gawk" for the actual search & replace but I couldn't be quite sure until I'd got the detailed spec and done half an hour's experiments. I'm assuming that efficiency of execution isn't as important as getting the job done but even if it is to become a "production" job, it's probably still woth prototyping it as a little bunch of scripts which you can rewrite in your language of choice later if needed. You've certainly got exactly the right environment for this kind of ad hoc text processing in *N*X - there are loads more text hacking tools than those I've mentioned.
